I had a B12injection on Monday and then five minutes later the nurse took a B12 blood test. The GP phoned and said my B12 level was high at 930. Will this blood test be accurate straight after an injection.
Thanks

It's accurate, but it's meaningless. You just injected so the B12 is pumping through your blood... I don't know what their goal was with the blood test...
The nurse gave me the B12injection and then did the blood test as if that was the correct procedure. I have had B12 injections for four years and was told that a B12 blood test was never going to give a true result so would not need to be tested again. GP has said he is not going to change things if I don’t want as in some people it does give a placebo.
Glad they are not stopping injections but did feel that I will be a fraud receiving them in the future.
What a waste of time and money.
They really need to sort this.
Dont be demeaned and made to feel a fraud.
An NHS neurologist said I wad probably addicted to b12 injections and was getting a psychological hit/high!
To wean off when I can??
Would love to not need them.
That particular one said all sorts that wasnt on the letter to Gp. Also all sorts that didnt happen on consult. I told Gp this .
She said they think of things afterwards. !!
Placebos have a place in medicine.
This isnt one of them though.
I refuse b12 tests but if you want folate it's done at same time.
Good practice at start but annoying after that if you only want a folate level .
I really do not know what is happening.
I used to have the highest respect for doctors and consultants.
This has to work both ways. Or have more training in ' people skills '
You cant help having expectations for a long awaited appointment.
My mum is 90 . On the whole has had good medical care. In the last 10 years even she says what the point in going to the doctor. They dont look at you or listen anymore and have no idea who you are.
Hi,
BSH Cobalamin and Folate Guidelines indicate that testing serum b12 after treatment has started is irrelevant.

Suggests
1) No proof that oral b12 is a good at treating B12 deficiency as B12 injections
2) Many current diagnostic tests eg serum b12, active B12, MMA, Homocysteine, are not totally reliable
3) Successful treatment should not be stopped
Actually, the result would have been roughly the same if they'd taken the blood first. It takes quite a while (a few hours for the B12 to all get into the bloodstream. So very little would have made its way there in a few minutes.
