High B12

I have a question. I have been having stomach pain and it got so painful went to ER. Was diagnosed with duodenitis. Was put on protonix. In recent bloodwork my B12 level came back over 2000. I DO NOT take b12 supplements and do not receive injections. Any ideas what would cause such high levels? I am actually a member of this site because my daughter has pernicious anemia. Any help?

Hi,

What did the doctors say about your high B12 level?

Have they ordered any further tests?

Link about serum B12 test.

Although you're not on supplements now, have you taken b12 supplements in the past?

It's possible to have high B12 levels but still have symptoms of B12 deficiency.

Assuming that you don't take any B12 supplements and don't use high energy drinks which contain large amounts of B12 then it could be a result of your infection if it has affected either your liver or your kidney function, or there could be something else going on that is affecting the liver or kidney function.

Kidney function problems means that the kidneys aren't going to be as efficient in removing excess B12. Liver infections can cause the liver to dump its stores of B12 all in one go. I would check with your GP/the ER to find out if they did blood tests for liver and kidney function and if so what the results were - otherwise talk to your GP about the possibility of blood tests to rule out kidney and liver problems.

I had basic blood test done in hospital and everything came back normal. I get my B12 checked every 6 months because of my daughters having pernicious anemia and 6 months ago my level was 680. I asked my primary if it could have anything to do with my stomach issues and he said “No but how weird but nothing to worry about”. I have an appt to see a gastroenterologist on May 4th. Thanks for the information.

If it as not been tested, see if you can get MTHFR gene blood test. Since your daughter has PA, you may have AI issues yourself. MTHFR gene issues and homocyteine level MAY give an indication of this. Just as us that receive regular B12 supplementation have high serum levels, and they mean nothing, your levels can result from non-methylating problems of dietary B12. Good luck!
