Upcoming surgery

I was curious to know about pain medications. I am having an upcoming surgery and am I right in saying it’s only NASIDS we should stay away from? I am getting clearance from my hematologist for the procedure so I am assuming he would advise, but I just want to make sure.

avoid nitrous oxide as an anaesthetic - you would need to repeat loading doses if it is used.

I will be under regular anesthesia to be put under. Do you know about the pain medications? Just no NSAIDs, correct?

I was as well but they use nitrous just before to relax you. I also had to specify. I apparently was the only one that has ever asked for no nitrous as he told me he had never heard of that before.🤦🏼‍♀️ I also increased frequency of injections in case the antibiotic and pain meds messed with the b12. I believe I only took Tylenol extra strength. I do find if I take an Advil now, although rarely for a headache as Tylenol does nothing for it, I feel like I need an injection. I feel so wonky for a couple of days. Good luck with surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery!

I will need a stoner medication after this surgery I am sure. I don’t take any NSAIDS now. I thought my GI said because of my PA, but maybe it was from the gastritis.

think you need to discuss pain medication with a medical professional - a pharmacist should be able to help.

To be honest I use NSAIDs without problems though I know they cause others problems and aren't recommended for use in patients with gastritis.

Agreed on nitrous oxide. They used it on me for my surgery and, as a result, I had no measurable level of B12 in my blood when I was finally tested.

Nitrous oxide should only be a problem for people who already have low B12. The nitrous can scavenge all the remaining B12. Normal people (and those with high levels because of injections) should be OK. But it can't hurt to discuss this with the doc.

NSAIDs are OK unless you have gastritis and you don't take large amounts of them.

Other pain meds have no effect on B12 levels.

Ok thank you. I don’t think they use any nitrous oxide here in the US except for dental procedures. They give IV meds for relaxation. Thank you everyone. I also have a gastritis history so I will make sure no NSAIDS.
