I am regular poster on the thyroid forum but this is my first post here! My question is has anyone experienced hairloss due to very low B12 and folate levels? I’ve had hairloss for five months now and have lost a lot of hair. I’m waiting for the intrinsic factor (?) blood test before I start injections and folate supplements. I just wondered (and hoped) others had had hairloss therefore this might why?
Thank you so much - Sarah xx

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply nano2. Has your daughter had a lot of hairloss? Mine started suddenly in April and has gone on ever since x
Yes she has, her hair has always been fine but over the months went very thin and bald patches. She now wears a wig. Although it’s very thin doesn’t seem to be anymore coming out x
I wouldn’t say suddenly. I noticed it first but didn’t want to add to the problems she already had as she was Quite poorly. There can be lots of reasons for hair loss even to do with age, illness, stress, Apparently hair does go through cycles where shedding happens then re growth.
hairloss /thinning is a recognised symptom of B12 deficiency. if the hairloss/thinning is due to B12 deficiency then correcting the deficiency will reverse the hairloss and filling.
However, hairloss and thinning are also symptoms of a number of conditions, including thyroid problems.
Thank you Gambit I wasn’t aware of hair loss with B12 in the beginning of this journey with my Daughter only as it started to come out when I washed and brushed it.
Hi Sarahlouise1980, my husbands hair used to fall out and had become very thin but since he has been on the b12 injections and tablets (folic acid sand vitd3) it has come back and thickened up again.
Thank you for replying! Did your husbands hair start shedding suddenly? I was fine one day and shedding hair the next! It’s been going on for five months now x
Hi, sorry I can’t really remember - I know I blamed the dog to start with! I know that when his system was starting to get back into balance again it came back stronger and was a darker colour again rather than a grey.
Yes, I have! I'm lucky to have started with very thick hair and lots of it so no bald patches yet but mine has been thinning and shedding excessively all year, very noticable to me, not so much to anyone else. I feel I've only got on top of the b12 with SI in the last 8-10wks so I'm hoping my hair will start to recover soon - does anyone know how long it should take to notice improvement in hair? (Nothing else came up on my tests but that was over a year ago, I'm now taking a basic multivitamin & mineral tablet as well)
It started gradually about a year ago but so did my deficiency. My symptoms including the hair loss peaked around July this year despite injecting once per month so that's when I increased to weekly. Other symptoms pretty much gone but the thinning and shedding hair remains at the moment. Hopefully you can start treatment soon and start to recover x
Sarahlouise, your iron might be fine but how's your ferritin? I had always been told my iron was fine, but my ferritin at 26 was just slightly above the lower level of the range. Apparently you need a ferritin level of around 80 for easing of hypothyroid symptoms and around 100 for new hair growth. Iron tablets are often poorly absorbed so you might not actually be getting much into your system. Good luck.
So it's not that then. Hopefully getting your B12 and folate up will help. If you aren't eligible for NHS injections and don't want to self-inject, then the Better You mouth spray might be a good option. Best wishes.
