Best absorbed iron for people with gastric sensitivity

Anything tried with success please.

This is for a family member who has regular b12 injections for deficiency due to malabsorbtion we think. Low ferritin 10 ng/l thyroid been tested and 'subclinical hypothyroid. Gp not treating? ? As computer hasn't flagged uo as out of range. Big weight gain on little food. Have since read low ferritin stops your thyroid working properly. Restricted diet gluten free fructose free and much more free. So i know many of you have gastro sensitivity. I've suggested Spartone. I'm sure other liquid forms have been mentioned but can't find the posts. This is not age related as in their 2o's

Any suggestions appreciated . As advertisements obviously say all are wonderful. Thanks

Ferrobisglycinate is usually a gentle version. Search amazon.

Dessicated liver pills also, although some are expensive.

Amazon again. From £9 upwards.

Yes thanks. Have you had your blood test yet to see if they have worked? I'm not due mine yet. Could not tolerate prescription of 310mg ferrous fumarate with folic acid so taking 210mg ferrous fumarate.

Thus is something I've read on a part post when rarising ferritin levels was discussed. Some said they could hardly tolerate iron until they found this ? Liquid form. I'm sticking to what I'm taking at present. This is for another person akso b12 deficient and a ferritin leveks of 9ng/l thanks for reply

The most easily absorbed form of iron is haem iron. The best source is red meat, especially liver.

For supplements the best form is chelated iron - bisglycinate, fumarate, etc.

Thanks I realise about the meat ect . The diet is so restricted thst the only meat tolerated is chicken. I thought a liquid form was mentioned on here once that was well tolerated just can't find the post. Person too poorly for trial and error

Yes I have the bisglycinate and ferrous fumarate. I also eat red meat and liver with vitamin C. This is for someone with gastric probless absorbtion probless as I said. I will serch agsin in the pots as I know I rear it but dudnt write it down!

I have no experience of liquid iron, apart from Spatone.

I would add that when I was really poorly I found the brands with no additives, were best suited to me. I still buy several supplements from nutri-supplements.co.uk

Thank you. I have suggested Spartone. Yes didn't think of that. Ref. No additives. Thank you

I used Spatone and it was gentle but it didn’t raise my levels as the dose per sachet wasn’t high enough. I’d highly recommend Garden of Life Raw iron. Or Garden of Life Healthy Blood if you require other co-factors (I think it includes folate B6 Vit C and B12 from memory).

I have really poor digestion but these are food grown (powdered capsules but can be opened and added to juice if you want) and have never caused me even the slightest of stomach issues. They both had a good and quick impact on my blood levels.

Thank you so much for your reply. I've found the same with Spartone . I think it good but for maintenence rather than getting g levels up.

Will source that for both of us to try.

I'll be the 'tester'

Hoping you are well

Wow! Five time the cost of Solgar Gentle Iron.

Nackapan profile image
Nackapan in reply tofbirder

I take solgar. Thar hasn't raised my levels. Again good for maintenance it seems for me

Unfortunately that is such a low dose you'll get more from a multivitamin and mineral supplement or normal foods.

Nackapan profile image
Nackapan in reply todeniseinmilden

Okay thanks I'm finding that myself. It's the elemental iron that seems to be needed. Not getting enough or absorbing g enough from foods. Every effort being made. My family member doesn't have caffeine or any alcohol but diet is limited. I'm tolerating ferrous fumarate 210 mg. Go prescribed 329 with folic acid. (Never agsin) so many are so good for maintenence but not treatment. My mum has the multivit floradix and does well on it.

Thank you, I've just checked it and you're right, I wonder if they've lowered the amount of iron in it as I used to take it years ago and it helped a bit.

I did have iron injections but then the surgery stopped giving them so really it was only for maintenance along with liver once a week. I havn't tolerated anything else I've tried, so maybe back to the liver every week as well.

Hi Nackapan, I have posted before regarding low ferritin and how I finally got it resolved. Having tried most of the preparations available via the GP and been unable to tolerate them - my stomach is very sensitive - one of the GP’s tried me with Sytron which is a liquid iron (sodium feredetate trihydrate). It’s not perfect! (causes loose motions), but that is preferable to being low in ferritin. It is available OTC if you/your family member don’t feel able/willing to ask the GP. It could be worth trying. (I am Hypothyroid as well). I wish you you/your relative well soon.
