There are a large number of indicators of iron status - the above lists 4 and gives the results for 4.

Whilst your ferritin (a protein that binds to iron allowing the body to use it) seems to be staying pretty steady the other three measures are showing a drop ie a deteriorating iron status and your blood iron is now below range - hence the supplements.

Any reasons to why? Could it be from too many blood tests as ive had nearly one a week since jan?? Just a thought

People with PA can have difficulty absorbing iron from food. I’m one of many on this forum. I have had an iron infusion but now take a gentle iron supplement every day and quarterly iron tests show this to be working for me. I can’t take the iron supplements the GP gives me as they’re too difficult on my stomach. I’d take the supplements and retest in 3 months to see the effects they’re having for you.

Will do just find it strange that it was normal in dec, i tested negative to PA tests but i think i will get the H Pylori test done just to rule that out aswell, strange that having low b12 in dec now low iron???

The test for PA is notoriously unreliable and gives false negatives in about 50% of cases. Do you know your B12 results?

Then you have an absorption problem with B12 and the most common cause of that is PA. in any even and absorption problem with B12, as I said, can cause problems with absorption of other vitamins and minerals. I personally have problems with iron and vit D. I had an iron infusion last year and my ferritin went from just over 400 (I’m make so that’s top of range) to 171 in under 3 months. And it continued to fall further along with my serum iron and transferrin saturation. One of the explanations for this is that people with B12 deficiency also have low or no stomach acid. Iron needs this to be absorbed. Another reason why I supplement with iron and take bets in HCL every day. Good luck with it all.

What is the cause of your malabsorption? Is that something that can be treated?

in reply to JAMV

PA is a cause of malabsorption as is EPI. I have both of these and both are being treated. It doesn’t cure completely the malabsorption though.

Does that mean you always have to get iron and offer vit infusions for life? What is EPI? Can you increase your stomach acid and thus be able to absorb b12 and other vitamins?

low iron tends to be the result of either loss of iron (eg through bleeding) or an absorption problem (which could be the same problem as is causing your B12 absorption problems

Yes im going to see about the h pylori test, thankyou

i had h pylori and was b12 deficient, vit D deficient and had a iron saturation of 21. i had another full iron panel done 2 months after h pylori eradicated and my saturation jumped right up to 35 (perfect for females, 45 for males) but it took 8 months before my b12 started being absorbed without injections. i guess it just took that long for my stomach to completely heal and start having/producing intrensic factor cells again.

additionally, prior to h pylori eradication, i took 5000 iu of D daily for 18 months and it only raised from 20 to 39, so i suggest you get out in the sun and by pass needing your stomach/gut to absorb it if you are found to be low in D.

Your story gives me hope. I hope my b12 deficiency is due to pylori so that I dont need to take b12 injections for life.....🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 My vit d also tested low (28) still waiting for ferriti test results.

May I ask if you had any neurological symptoms from b12 deficiency?

My Iron was 7.5 umol/L and Trafnsferrin sat. 13% when my low B12 was first identified.

Blood test immediately after 6 loading B12 injections both bounced back by themselves and I dont eat much iron in my diet. Iron 18.5 Transferrin sat. 37%

Then two months later I randomly drank a glass of raw beetroot juice and had beeturia. Never had this before so I read up about it that it could indicate low iron so I took Sapatone for 20 days. Then I tried drinking another glass of raw beetroot juice and no pink urine, so perhaps my iron was low again.

I have no idea why it goes up and down like this.
