Hi these are my 22 yr old nieces results . She’s symptomatic also
Can someone interpret these results p... - Pernicious Anaemi...
Can someone interpret these results please
They all look good. What are the symptoms? What was the HbA1c? What was thyroid tests?
This was all she had done . Very strong family history of pa . Symptomatic for years . Her folate is low and active b12 is low in range. Do you think she could get injections going by these results
I can’t see many doctors agreeing to injections. Her Active B12 is well above the bottom of the range and that test is more accurate and more precise than the normal serum test.
Folate and ferritin are both good tests that give a fair indication of iron/ folate status.
The reason I asked bout other tests is that many symptoms of a B12 deficiency overlap those of hypothyroidism and diabetes.
I will get her to mention getting these done also as I have hyperthyroidism and diabetes is in the family . Thanks fbirder
You may have read on Thyroid UK that Ferritin at mid-range is good to help with conversion from T4-T3 .. so above level seems low. Has a Full Blood Count been carried out ?
Here's a site that says about active b12 that "between 25-70 referred for MMA".
I wouldn't be able to function with a ferritin level similar to the one you've quoted.
I get the following symptoms with low ferritin and/or low serum iron, which all go away completely or improve massively when I have levels which are as close to optimal as I can get them without going over:
Restless legs
Cramp
Benign fasciculations (look it up on youtube if you don't know what this is - it isn't rude!)
Dreadful fatigue
Severe brain fog
Muscle weakness
Anxiety
Depression
I've always had low iron problems (it's a problem which is very common within my family). I try to keep my ferritin as close to mid-range as I can, and my serum iron slightly above mid-range.
I pay for my own iron testing and buy my own prescription-strength iron supplements. Although my results are not bad now I still take iron supplements to maintain my level as close to optimal as possible.

The last link I've given is less useful than the one before it but could be useful if anaemia is suspected. People can have iron deficiency without being anaemic and it should be treated. A lot of doctors will only treat iron deficiency when anaemia is also present, but to have a hope of a decent quality of life, low iron should be treated with or without anaemia (in my opinion). It is important not to go over optimal on iron-related results.
I have no medical training.
