Weird feeling after B12 jab

Slosh profile image
17 Replies

I have had B12 jabs for about 40 years. In SA you used to be able to get them easily.

I used to have the Cyno plus a b complex jab.

In UK I have bought Hydroxy from Amazon De - Rotexmedica B12 Depot brand and take a BComplex supplement.

I am on Cortisone for an autoimmune disease - weaning slowly (currently 8mg). In Dec last year I was hospitalised with pneumonia and had loads of hectic meds.

Since then everytime I have a B12 jab I feel really weird - slightly dizzy, vision a bit blurred, and almost like I can feel it running cold through my vascular system. This has happened 3 X now - I'm scared to try again. It has however happened to me without having a jab too.

Thanks xxx

Not a doctor but possibly because cyno is synthetic it may have interaction? Might be worth trying methylcobalamin which works very well for me.

May I clarify? Are you suggesting that methylcobalamin is NOT synthetic? (As in not made by the same basic process as other B12s.)

Methylcobalamin is naturally occurring and cyano is a synthetic form as far as I understand. Not sure this has anything to do with the negative effects but maybe a possibility or worth a try

Methylcobalamin does not exist anywhere in nature, apart from fleetingly. And then it is only formed when a molecule of cob(I)alamin attaches to the Methionine Synthase enzyme, along with a molecule of methylfolate and one of homocysteine. The methyl group is passed from the methylfolate to the cob(I)alamin, forming methylcobalamin. But that same methyl group is then passed on to the homocysteine, forming methionine. The whole process takes fractions of a second.

Apart from that brief existence, methylcobalamin is not found in nature.

Assay any biological source of B12 and it will be hydroxocobalamin (or aquacobalamin) with a bit of adenosylcobalamin. You will find virtually no methylcobalamin unless it has been taken as a supplement. Even then, it is so unstable that I doubt little of it survives passing through the gut.

I used cyno long ago never felt weird. Then used hydroxy - never felt weird -until recently - since January this year.

Slosh, unless you have changed brand recently or something about the brand you are using has changed (eg the preservatives), and particularly as you say you experience the same symptoms not associated with injections, it sounds as if this is a co-incidence.

If you are worried then you can also source cyanocoblamin from Germany (and it's cheaper) and try that.

In the meantime I would suggest that you keep a record of times when you experienced the weird episodes and see if you can identify another common factor.

Thank you. Could I perhaps have just been very deficient and low on co-factors?

I've checked blood sugar and it seems find.

possible but the way to start trying to identify what is happening would be to have more information about when it is actually happening

It's pretty random.

Sounds very much like it could be to me - especially potassium or magnesium. I get exactly the same feeling sometimes (but not associated with my jabs) and I seem to have a range of malabsorption issues which can lead to all sorts of deficiencies.

It could be well worth asking for a mineral and vitamin blood profile to be done to see what you might be short of but don't forget that the blood test will only show the problem significantly if you are experiencing the symptoms at the time and the next thing you eat might be what's needed to bring your levels above those of symptoms. That said it will show if something is on the low side.

After the tests you may well benefit from taking a broad spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement plus extra folate, potassium, magnesium and iron ideally from your diet.

Google these extras to see the effects of deficiency and excess and what dietary sources you might like. Inexpensive supermarket A-Z multivitamin and mineral supplements are as good as any and often better than more expensive branded ones. The advantage of these is they cover all sorts of things you might need in a good balance.

There is an answer - it's just finding it! Good luck.

I've just seen your other replies saying that your cortisone affects potassium and magnesium so it seems even more likely, especially as that is what causes my symptoms like that.

Thank you. I do take supplements. 💞

Hi Slosh You may be able to source cyanocobamalin from Canada

buy-otc.com/vitamin-b12-inj...

I've been on it every month for over 46 years without any ill effect and I'm still "clivealive" aged 77 :)

I wish you well

Thank you - I remember that about you. I never reacted to the hydroxy before. I was wondering if I am just that low and co-factors are not optimal? Am on cortisone treatment and it affects magnesium, potassium etc

Well I hope you find a solution quickly.

I use cyano without issues. I've tried an hydroxy nasal spray and it made me feel very dizzy; I wanted to use it between jabs for a boost, but could not handle it. I would try cyano. Good luck!

Thanks. What puzzles me is that I used 20 vials of Hydroxy with no problems and then the first in a new batch with no problem - it was only after that.
