”Surplus” B12 in urine

Hi Guys

Had an unexpected breakthrough today, Thursday. I am away from home and I forgot to pack my B12 and needle, syringe etc. I have my “emergency” jab in my handbag so decided to save that for the drive home tomorrow, Friday.

So today, no B12 jab. So in the morning I took 2 x oral methylcobalamin 1300mg and also in the afternoon, so 5200mg in total. But my urine is not as greeny/yellow as when I inject 1500mg Hydroxocobalamin.

Does this mean that more of the methylcobalamin was used by my body or does it pee out a different colour to Hydroxocobalamin? I feel fine and I have had a fairly active afternoon although mentally a lot more rested than usual.

Thank you in advance for the insight and wisdom I know you guys will share.

The thing about strong b12 tablets is that you only absorb around 1 %. So 5.2 mg as tablets actually gives much less than a 1 mg injection.

Hi Palmier

Thank you fir replying and for the info that’s useful to know.

So you are confirming that around 99% would leave via urine. So my question is does the unused methylcobalamin colour your urine less vibrantly than Hydroxocobalamin?

No, the 99 % or so that is never absorbed will most likely end up in feces with everything else that wasn't absorbed from the intestines.

There is of course some individual variation, but the numbers I've seen is that around 30 % of a 1 mg hydroxycobalamin injection is retained, and the rest apparently goes out with the urin.

The numbers should be thought of as averages and estimates. Some people notice no effect at all from tablets and need to get b12 with injections.

Edit: Some b12 also leave the body with bile from the liver. Some of that may be reabsorbed, but not so much for people who can't absorb b12 well.

☝️ this. You cannot directly compare injected versus oral doses since only ~1% of large oral doses are absorbed. The rest is not absorbed and simply continues through your digestive tract to eventually leave in faeces (so would not affect urine colour)

You would have absorbed only around 52mcg of total B12 from that oral dosage. You said you took a 1300mg tablet but I assume you meant 1300mcg? There are no 1300mg oral dose B12 tablets. Also the injected dose I think is more likely 1500mcg?

So the amount in your blood stream that could be cleared in urine is an order of magnitude smaller with the oral dose, although it seems high until you do the absorption math. Thus your less concentrated urine colour is not only not a surprise, it is quite to be expected.

I have seen much higher numbers of around 70% of hydroxocobalamin retained from an 1mg injection and 85% from 0.5mg. Here is one reference:

sciencedirect.com/science/a...

Do you have some reference for that 30% number?

palmier profile image
palmier in reply toam111

My reference is the info a Swedish pharmaceutical reference work gave about a product called Behepan. Unfortunately its in Swedish.

90% av en injicerad dos av hydroxokobalamin om 100 mikrogram och 30% av en dos om 1 mg retineras

But goole translates it correctly to

90% of an injected dose of hydroxocobalamin of 100 micrograms and 30% of a dose of 1 mg is retained

This product is now discontinued so the info is no longer available where I first saw it att fass.se, but I found it online here:

Great to hear Wwwdot. Yay.

The honest answer is I do not know.

When things like this happen to me, I just say ‘Yep, I have got it in the bag as I am winging it again.’

We do not have the answers nor technology for everything and never will. There are still Nobel Prizes to be won and new adventures to be had. There are lots of things I do not try to work out, just accept because I direct my energy into weird and wonderful things.

For example, yesterday I popped to pick up my prescription. I decided to spend some time at an event. I juggled, painted, chatted and listened to music. Then limped home. Nobody had a clue because I had only meant to be 10 minutes (fatigue day) that I was not wearing underwear.

However, my real intent was to make connections. I explained to an event organiser, a voluntary organisation, that I am involved with which is not the P.A. Society. The organiser explained their role in the community and what the organisation does to support. Then they handed over some leaflets.

Hi Narwhal

Thank you it is good when we have these unexpected wins! I have been like a buzz box all night mind racing away not able to drop off to sleep 😴 most unusual for me. The only thing I can think of is that I took those 4 x B12 methylcobalamin instead of the Hydroxocobalamin. I have been working on my gut health for the last 9 months so I am wondering if I may have improved my B12 absorption?

Anyway back to you - love the decision to throw caution to the wind - doesn’t it FEEL SO GOOD! The absence of underwear made me chuckle as a few weeks ago I similar - got up in the wee hours to rescue a sheep (as you do🤣🤣) and then got distracted doing odd bits and bobs - it was only around midday that I realised I was still in my pyjamas albeit with a woolly jumper and welly boots! 🤪

🤣😂 Love the rescuing the sheep. All your wellys and pjs needed was a feather boa and you’d be on the catwalk.

I have rescued a sheep on a hen do. One of my best friends has a horse called Mouse. 😆 They are from farming stock and work as a nurse.

I do not believe that B12 effects the color of urine and if it did than it would be known. The knowledge about peeing out B12 is from testing of cobalamin in the urine after injecting. It is not a frequency thing.

The increase in urination when taking B12 is known. The reason why is unknown. I wonder if it is that when healing the neurological system is affected and therefore the urination is affected. I do know my frequency of urination has decreased as my supplement regimen has improved.

Supplements other than B12 do affect the color of urine. Think beet root.

So, that your urine has changed color when taking oral methylcobalamin and you feel better is definitive. The causation is unknown. Perhaps your body utilizes the oral methylcobalamin in the amounts administered in a way that is positive. That seems to me from very far away and little information the data which is important.

The data is based on that you have been injecting hydroxocobalamin which has been positive and may be in your system still. It may be the two forms are working together.

I currently am injecting 1.5 mg methylcobalamin and take 3000 mcg with adenasol. My trials have shown that methylcobalamin with adenosylcobalamin to be the most effective form and combination to date. The frequency of injections is need based and to date it is 4 to 5 times daily.

It is also possible that your body utilized a supplement in a more efficient way and hence the other supplement(s) that were causing the change in color no longer change the color. Pretty much it is no longer peed out.

When I first started my intake of "Simple Supplement" my urine was bright yellow as was indicated by their website and that has resolved. I am assuming my body is now utilizing the ingredients in the supplement.

I have written "Simple Supplements" with a question on the color of my urine. I will let you know what they say.

I see that you are from the USA . You can obtain B12 ( Cynocobalamin) for injections in the form of multi -dose vials and single use ampoules from Canada

I haven’t exact information here but Sandoz . make them .

You can obtain B12 ( Hydroxocobalamin from German online pharmacies .

My Question:

"Hello,

When I started utilizing Simple Spectrum the color of my urine was bright yellow as described on your website.

Thing is that has now gone away. Is that normal? And do you know the reason why that happens?"

The answer from Simple Supplement Staff:

"We do hear about urine changing color due to the methylated Vitamin B’s. Important B vitamins in our supplement contain yellow-orange pigments and when passed through the body may color the urine. It’s actually a fact on our website."

I’m not a dr but I would imagine shots absorb better while tablets don’t. I can’t take over the counter anything in the b category. I have to have a prescription. Best results for me are a prescription b complex vitamin. Is US over the counter vitamins aren’t regulated and are less effective. Believe me, I’ve tried to make it easy for refills. Along with the b 12 shots. When I get anemic from lack of maintaining my injections/prescription s I have to go back to daily and then shots once. Week until symptoms completely subside and then I can go once a month if I stay on the prescription b complex as well.
