A functional deficiency means

1. You have lots of B12 in your blood.

2. Not enough is getting into the cells.

The MMA test will tell you if 2. is correct.

To test for a functional deficiency you need to know that 1. and 2. are correct at the same time. So you need to do the MMA test while you have lots of B12 in your blood.
