Hi All

Just reading an article in today’s Sunday Times that from this week Sainsbury’s will be selling mushrooms with b12 and vitamin D within claiming that it will correct the deficiency in these vitamins for the 52% of vegans who are deficient.

I think it’s November 11 not April 1 - or are is the claim correct?

Mushrooms, like people, can make vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. So that’s not too surprising.

B12 would have to be added artificially. Unless the mushrooms are grown in manure and not washed properly.

But I wonder if the B12 in mushrooms is the inactive kind , which our bodies cannot make use of . If Sainsbury’s are advising vegans , shouldn’t they have to substantiate their claims ? If B12 is added artificially , then it must be

stated on the goods .

Hi W

I don’t know, I’ve looked it up on Sainsbury’s site but cannot see any mention of it. The article seems to imply that they have created a mushroom which provides b12.
