Anaesthetic & Antibiotics

I was diagnosed with b12 deficiency 2.5 years ago and after the initial loading shots I have been getting monthly shots privately. During this time I have had minimal problems and everything has been pretty good until the last 6 weeks. Now most of my original symptoms have returned, pins & needles in hands, cramps, muscle twitching, breathlessness, vibrations, tiredness etc. Approx 10 weeks ago I had major surgery for over 4 hours and almost immediately after this I had an infection that did not initially respond to antibiotics thus had a cocktail of antibiotics for 7 weeks before issues were resolved. Thus my question finally is, do you think the return of my symptoms could be related to these two events ? I saw a Haematologist today who said no, as anaesthetic and antibiotics would not impact the body’s store of b12 only any new b12 introduced but I can’t help thinking it must all be linked as I have been so good symptom wise for two years???? I had a b12 injection a few days ago so my levels are high.

I find I need more B12 when I'm stressed, or excited - it feels like I 'use it up' faster when there's adrenaline or cortisol involved!

Nitrogen oxide, which is sometimes used in anaesthetic, can effectively make the B12 in your system unusable, so if they gave you some of that, you might find you need to top up quite a lot to get back to your usual levels.

Hi LWhelan was the anaesthetic nitrous oxide?

Have you had your Folate level tested recently?

I am not medically trained.

Hi I just checked and they did not use nitrous oxide so I guess that rules out the anaesthetic.

many thanks
