My vitamin D was just around the low end but within range, but I have bone pains and I know I need it in the higher range. My GP wasn’t going to give me anything but I told him I had symptoms ( pain in hips, lower back, back of heels and in feet).
He gave me 800iu once daily but I knw that’s not enough so I bought my own 1000iu from Holland & Barrats.
I take 2 a day so that’s 2000iu daily. I would like to ask if anyone knows if that’s a good dose to take daily to increase my Vit D.
You can also buy Hux D3 20,000iu from Boots but I thought it will be too much. Also my gp for some reason said “we don’t want it to get high all of a sudden”. I don’t know why he said that, if anyone knows ?

I personally took 5000 iu of D combined with A and K daily for 16 months and only increased my D from 20 to 39. It wasnt until i started taking magnesium suppliments and epsome salt baths that it increased to 70.
But i had h pylori which I think caused hypochloridia, low stomach acid. I say this because i tried taking betaine hcl with pepsin tablets in december and i slowly increased to where i could take 18 (6 before, 6 in middle, 6 at end of a meal) without any stomach discomfort. It freaked me out so i have scaled back to just taking 4-6 per meal depending on amount of meat, hoping that since my h pylori test is now negative (as of February 2018) my stomach acid will improve on it own due to being able to heal. Fingers crossed.
I have read the skin can produce the equivalent of 20-25k iu per day. D has to be taking with fat due it being a fat soluable vitamin. My suggestiin would be to try 5000iu once or twice daily with a meal and increase magnesium.
Take care not to over-supplement as this can cause vitamin D toxicity. If your GP won't test your levels to keep a checkon things, there are private testing companies that can do it - search the Internet - prices can vary quite widely 😉
I use 'Dr Best' vitamin D capsules, they come in 1000, 2000 and 5000. They don't contain any fillers, but shop around on the Internet as they not only vary in price, the cost of postage does too. I ordered from a different supplier and thought the postage was really cheap... until I got a postcard from Royal mail wanting another £13 before they would deliver!
By the way, the big dose ones you saw in Boots is probably a weekly dose, some folk take it weekly/bi- weekly to get levels up. My original prescription from the doctor was 20,000 twice weekly, but it was extremely low.
20,000iu is a high dose. That is if you’re deficient you take 1 to 2 weekly. They also have 50,000iu which is if you’re very low on Vit D. Both are too high to take regularly. They’re for temporary use.
Yes my level was only 11, it went up to 83 then two months later (in the summer) it went back down to 60. I take about 8000iu a day along with Mk-7 (vitamin k2) to help direct the D to the bones. According to the vitamin D council it should be around 100 nmol/L.
Have you always been taking 8000iu from the start or did you take a higher dose then went down to 8000iu ?
How much of K2 ?
I also read today that Vit D gel capsules are better and tablets don’t work ! (I don’t know if thats true...if anyone can advise). Ones I got are tablets.
