Hey I had blood tests recently done and when I rang for my results the receptionist told me my B12 was abnormal and Folates were low when the Doctor rang he said I had low Folates and he prescribe some Folic Acid which I would need to take for 4 months then get another blood test is this normal

I have some of the symptoms that I have seen here eg: fatigue pins and needles in my hands and feet memory is very bad I also have an under active Thyroid but have been on Levothyroxine for a few years now

Fine out exact b12 level.

If below 200 request homocystein and mma before supplimenting.

Do not let them give you folic acid prior to b12 as this can resolve signs of b12 anemia (high mcv) without resolving the b12 deficiency.

Higher folate levels mask low b12 (reduce mcv).

If you have low b12 and folate you need b12 and folate, not just folate.

Hi Krypton71 as KimberinUS rightly says get your "abnormal " B12 level sorted before supplementing with Folic acid.

I am not a medically trained person but I've had P.A. (a form of B12 deficiency) for more than 45 years.
