Hi Josh

It a Mark here a fellow B12 sufferer your results show a low folate and your B12 although in range is on the low side. However this is not showing the active B12 in your system only the amount in your blood. Do you have symptoms? If you have a full blood count you could post it would help others to support you.

Post your other results and let us know your reason for the above tests.

Mark

I'm confused because the other guy that commented said that my levels are well above range suggestion that I am not deficient? But yeah I do get a lot of neurological symptoms, maybe it could be something else

Hi Josh

Just so we can get some perspective on your situation.

What were the reasons for your B12 and folate test form your gp

You mention symptoms but can you expand on the neurological symptoms

Have you any other symptoms that worry you

Are you on any meds for your digestion

Do you have your other blood results you can post.

Forums rely on as much info as possible as we cannot know your medical background

Hope to hear and we can help you further.

Thanks Mark

your folate is low but unlikely to be deficient.

Serum B12 is a difficult test to interpret because people vary a lot when it comes to B12 and how the amount in their blood relates to whether or not they have enough available in your cells. You are in the grey area where some countries would start to treat on the basis of symptoms, but your still quite a long way from the bottom of the range.

Serum B12 if used as a single measure will miss 25% of those who are B12 deficient (but also pick up 5% who aren't). Evaluating symptoms can be very difficult as there is a huge overlap with other conditions, including thyroid. Evaluating symptoms is an important part of interpreting results

Noticed a post on TUK 15 days ago in which GP has refused B12 test because you don't have anaemia - B12 deficiency will cause macrocytic anaemia - in which blood cells are rounder and larger than normal - however if you have iron problems as well this will mask this tendency AND 25-30% of people who are B12 deficient present without any signs of macrocytic anaemia so not having (macrocytic) anaemia does not rule out B12 deficiency.

Suggest that you write to your GP pointing out the limitations of B12 serum test, restating your symptoms and history of development of symptoms and saying that the information on the limitations of the text is based on the BCSH (British Council for Standards in Haematology) standards on Cobalamin and B12 deficiency.

However, it is far from being a clear cut case. There are a few tests that canhelp to clarify which look at waste products that build up if cells don't have enough B12 to recycle them - namely MMA and homocysteine (though homocysteine will also be raised if folate is insufficient and MMA can be raised by other factors). Its not conclusive but it is all part of providing more context for interpreting results.

Yeah I've tried asking, and my doctors has only sent me to see a chronic fatigue specialist, but I know my body I used to train it everyday, so I knows there's been a dramatic change, the NHS are crooks, and I know they buy time to save money
