B12 results : Hi I just joined this... - Pernicious Anaemi...
B12 results
Hi Clairepaul3 What is your diagnosis - B12 Deficiency or Pernicious Anaemia and how long after your last injection were you tested?
Also was your Folate level checked?
I am not a medically trained person but there are others on here who will be able to give you good advice if you can give some more details about yourself.
My doctor never really said if it was either deficiney or pernicious anaemia I have a underactive thryoid/hashis so get blood tests quite frequently and my b12 was low so I just started to get injections,my folate results are7.9 (3.1-19.9) I got these results at the end of January so it was start of November that I got the injection
Thyroid problems and B12 deficiency are often associated. Your B12 level is not "that high" although I've no doubt it is flagged "Normal"
I think your Foalte level could benefit from being higher as this gets "used up" processing the B12 among other things. Ask your doctor what he thinks
If you have neurological symptoms make a list of them and present this to your doctor and ask him to increase the frequency of your injections to see if there is an improvement.
If possible take someone with you who can validate your symptoms as the doctor is less likely to pooh pooh you in front of a witness.
I am not saying that this is an easy thing to do but try to stay calm, write out what you want to say and keep to the script.
I struggled for years with my "one size fits all" GP but succeeded in the end.
I wish you well and hope you get the treatment you need and deserve.
if you had neurological symptoms - though there may be a bit of a battle on that because of overlap with thyroid symptoms - then you should get maintenance doses every 2 months.
No guarantee that even 2 months would be enough though and no real scientific evidence to support the 3 month regime - other countries use monthly and even that may not be enough.
359 seems quite low for someone receiving shots but getting though to GPs can be quite difficult.
Supplementation options are:
sublingual tablets or sprays - Jarrows very popular (tend to be methyl which doesn't necessarily suit everyone)
nasal sprays - I use a company called detox.people
skin patches - no personal experience.
No guarantee as they don't work for everyone - all you can do is try and see. Lot of supplements are methyl but people don't necessarily respond best to methyl so worth trying other types of B12 - hydroxo and cyano - if you find you aren't responding until you find something that works for you. You can also experiment with dose - try upping to see if that makes a difference etc.
