My gp advised me to take 800iu twice a day... is it OK to take 1600iu once a day with my evening meal that usually contains more fat? Thanks

Hi Vicki b12

I take 10 000iu daily as my gp suggested 800iu which isn't enough for low Vit D. you can get these on Amazon for 365 tablets at a reasonable price

They know an awful lot more than random stuff on the interwebs.

Too much Vitamin D is toxic...

Trouble is, they do not appear to know that there are two forms usually available - D2 and D3. There are reasons to choose D3 but the NHS page gives no help with that information.

suggest you try posting on TUK if you are concerned about interactions with thyroid medication

Taking two at the same time is ok, the body can store vitamin D temporarily as it's a fat soluble vitamin.

I'd been aiming at 2.000 of D3 (cholecalciferol) a day, but recent guidelines suggested 5,000 a day was better, so you might want to add more unless you're spending a lot of time outdoors during the summer. I'm smaller than average, so now go for 4,000 a day. Less if I've been in the sun for more than 30 minutes. I'm vegetarian, so don'd get a lot of D from food sources, & became very deficient from relying on foods fortified with D2 as it's useless.

I take mine at least 4 hours away from thyroid hormones & HRT as they clash.

After having been prescribed a very high dose for a week, I have been taking 5,000 (125mcg) daily (as advised by GP) during the winter, and less during the summer. However, my levels were still not optimal so have increased dose for the past 2 months. Will now continue at original dose, 5,000 (125mcg) daily, maybe reduce to alt days during the summer, and see what my levels are in November (annual check)

It's amazing how different GPs differ in the dosage (UK)

Take the dose as instructed,,to give your body time to process the dose and for your body to start using it,,,,too much too fast will just make your body dump it,,and the benefits will be wasted,,,and overdosing can be toxic for your organs,,,slow and steady to get the best for your body,,and for the benefits to start building up with your body,,,ttfn from karen.

I was prescribed 20,000 oi Vit D3 1 tablet twice a week as mine was very low.

It has 40 gel capsules so last you 20 weeks. Then advised to take 1000iu daily.

I had very bad lower back and hips pain also in other places in the body (felt like broken bones).

Its made a huge difference!

At the same time I have 1 B12 injection every 2 weeks which also greatly helped with the pain.

I now do hours of hard work and back pain is manageable without painkillers. I'm surprised B12 helped tremendously with the bone pain (probably because the nerves had s lot to do with pain) so depends how bad your symptoms are.

Go according to your symptoms, then you need a daily maintenance dose.

You can take 2 x 800iu once daily as it's not a huge dose.
