Body aches

Is body acnes normal even after your blood levels have returned back to normal? I was diagnosed with PA in February. Have had loading doses of B12. Two iron infusions were done end of March and in April. I have good days and bad days. Just want these aches and pains to go away.

Hi eswoods83 It is not uncommon for some symptoms to appear to get worse before they get better as the B12 you are having injected gets to work repairing the damage done to your nervous system caused by the deficiency.

Are you in the UK and if so what frequency and what type of B12 injections are you on?

Also do you know what your Folate level is as this and B12 helps your iron to make red blood cells?

It is still early days yet and there is no set time limit for improvement as a lot will depend on how long you were B12 deficient before your February diagnosis however, there is life after P.A. as tomorrow is the 45th anniversary of my first cyanocobamalin B12 injection and I'm still "clivealive" at 75.

Happy Anniversary! I am in the US. I asked if my Folate could be checked because I know taking B12 injections can lower it but my doctor just looked at me like I was crazy. It was 17.9 which falls in the mid normal range. But I am sure it is less than that now since the last time they checked was in January.

Thanks eswoods83 my nurse was absolutely amazed when I told her yesterday as she gave me my injection. I have been a patient at the same surgery for over 51 years and this afternoon I am to attend a committee meeting of "The Friends of O******D Surgery" which raises funds to provide additional equipment for both staff and patients. We hold raffles, tombolas and sales to raise money as a way of "giving something back". My original doctor from way back in 1966 is still alive and is now a Dame for her services to medicine.

Personally I have taken 1 - 400mcg Folic acid tablet and 1 - 210mcg Ferrous Fumerate tablet every day for more years than I can remember as a "maintenance dose" and like yours, my level when last tested was well within range.

I wish you well.

Thank you for your advice. I'll take some Folic Acid. I've had 2 iron infusions already as well. I don't want to supplement with iron right now because I want to see how well my body stores it first from the infusions. My ferritin has dropped from 149 to 79 in two weeks. And since my doctor believes I should be able to hold on to iron a little better, I want to prove him wrong. Its crazy because people think that just because your blood levels are normal that you should be fully recovered. But yet I still have muscle aches and pains along with spasms, shortness of breath, and chest pains.

Do you think it could be arthritis which is another auto immune disease? Can only speak for myself but I hurt all over most mornings, hands upper arms and back seem the worst bits its been going on with me since before I was diagnosed and I have given up hope of it going completely but I do try and keep as mobile as I can and try to keep in an even temperature as I think cold makes it worse

All the best

I have no clue pitney . I am 33 years old but I'm very tall and have very long limbs. I remember a few years ago a doctor told me that I may have issues with arthritis sooner because of my height but I hope not now.

Do you know your VitD levels ? Often when one vitamin/mineral is low then others follow due to poor absorption issues. VitD is an anti-inflammatory - steroidal - pro -hormone - needed in every cell of your body. Docs often prescribe too low a dose to be effective. Dosing should be based on the initial test result and follow-up testing is required.

Also low thyroid caused by Hashimotos - can be the cause of body aches and pains. Also auto-immune :-)

Yes, originally my Vitamin D was a 9. Normal range is 30-100. Now my level is 40. I've had my thyroid checked several times the TSH, T3, T4 test done but all within normal range.
