Hi Sharon

One result I can see is the Red blood cell distribution width which is creeping up towards the upper limit and that is a marker in Anemia/ B12.

Apparently it is not a urgent problem so no action needed at this time, unable to get an appointment to actually see her.

Hi

Thanks for reply basically anemia is the condition but it could be Anemia, pernicious anemia or Macrocitic anemia. However with symptoms B12 deficiency needs treating properly and you need to know whether it is Pernicious or not. If so then you will be on B12 injection for life. So you need to have a Diagnosis including folate levels and B12 results ASAP

Your B12 level is bottom of the range.

B12 serum is not a good test to use as a single marker. Normal range will miss 25% of people who are deficient. 25% of people who are deficient do not present initially with macrocytosis (enlarged and rounder red blood cells). Symptoms are very important in diagnosing a B12 deficiency.

You can find a check list of symptoms here

The information above on the limitations of serum B12 and using macrocytosis as a marker for B12 deficiency (your blood work doesn't indicate macrocytosis) comes from the BCSH guidelines on cobalamin and folate deficiencies.

If you have neurological symptoms it is important that you start treatment as soon as possible.

Your folate levels are also quite low and are likely to be lowered when you start B12 treatment so suggest that you review diet and/or use a supplement to keep folate levels up at least during the early days of treatment
