Almost passed out.

I took a tiny amount of B12 (maybe 500mcg that I cut from a 2500mcg chewable) and nearly passed out. Does anyone know what the cause of this is?

Do you maybe have other deficiencies like iron or potassium, or blood sugar issues? Out of curiosity, what form of b12 was it?

could you say a little more about why you were taking the tablet?

Do you have a diagnosis of B12 deficinecy?

It is unlikely to be anything to do with B12 but could be to do with another ingredient in the tablet, or is a co-indcidence/caused by another condition that has an overlap with the symptoms of B12

This happened to me but the dr said it was due to taking selexid.

This is happening to me too. First with the injections which were stopped then sublinguals then tablets, a worse reaction every time, now I can't even take multivitamins. I have b12 levels of 85 and have no idea what to do now.

KathyN Have you been tested for allergy? That might be a good place to start. You could, for now, try the old fashioned way and eat a lot (a lot) of B12 rich food so at least sómething comes in somewhere, til you know more.

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes I'm trying to do that. I have been in contact with a consultant allergist who says as I do not have classic anaphylaxis it must be an extreme reaction (side effect) to the drug rather than an allergy. She is however unsure what to do but says I shouldn't take anymore. (my reaction is pretty extreme and goes on for around a week, it feels like it's going to kill me and is worse each time) I have discovered that several of my relatives in the past had pernicious anaemia so the thought is that this is what is going on. I now have a lot of neuro symptoms and am frankly terrified of what the future may hold. If you have any ideas at all I cannot tell you how grateful I would be.

But did they actually test for allergy? I mean to be very sensitive to B12 is possible, but with a multi it's strange. I would insist on actual allergy test to be sure what's going on. And ask for MMA testing and B12 to see how your level is right now. Besides that I can only suggest eating food very rich in B12 and see if that improves levels (somewhat) like liver, shellfish, sardines, etc. Try and see.

Yes I know what you mean but she said no point in testing as if it was an allergic reaction I would have had swollen lips, problems with my airway and hives. I was going to see her privately as nhs waiting list was going to be so long. She told me I'd be wasting my money. I agree it seems really strange she was very pleasant but insistent. My GP rang on Friday to say b12 right down again, didn't think to ask to what to as I wasn't expecting the call. Sorry unsure what mma testing is. My GP is really nice but has no idea what to suggest. I've always eaten a good diet and will continue to do so but it doesn't seem to be helping. I really have no idea what to do.

I do not mean a normal good diet, load up on food with B12, so add that much more than is in a 'normal' diet and see if that changes our value. I mean quadrouple your intake of B12 with food, at least. Talk to your GP about testing that in, let's say, 6 weeks of eating a lot of that. And talk to your GP about a 2nd opinion allergy specialist. Ask to test MMA, which shows even better than B12 how the deficiency is. (methylmalonic acid) Read the Pinned Posts for more info on the home page of this forum. And call monday for the exact B12 value and an appointment to talk abot the above. That's what I would do all.
