As some of you may know, PA is just one of the autoimmune conditions I’ve been blessed with. I was Covid phobic and barely went outside for eighteen months. I let my guard down and ventured to the seaside for a few days. I’ve come back with the dreaded disease and have shared it with my partner now 😞 I was obliged to contact the Health Board and was supplied that day with an antiviral drug treatment.

The point I’m clumsily trying to make is don’t let your guard down. I’ve slipped up badly and am paying in spades. The only positive is it’s great weather out there for staying in bed. People like us have to be wary of pretty much everything all the time. Such fun!

Sorry to hear you have the dreaded virus. Hope you get well soon. Probably a lesson for all, don't let your guard down, nobody can see it but once you got it by god you know it.

Best wishes

I’ve been so careful but I guess staying in a crowded hotel was always going to be a bit of a risk x

Thank you for your timely warning 👍

So sorry! I hope you have a speedy recovery. The antivirals are supposed to be effective so I hope it cuts down your misery. Take care x

That was me last January, I had been very paranoid & never went out for nearly 2 years. Then took a trip to see my extended family and then, bam! You never know where it's lurking!

I just noticed your profile pic 😂😂

Thanks Jade. I do feel as if I let myself down even although I hand wash like a surgeon. The mask had to come off in a crowded dining room. At least the food was great.

Just a bit of reassurance and sorry, but I don’t mean to sound smug 😳 I had Omicron very mildly last year (had much worse viruses/colds before).

Put it down to having taken 4,000 i.u vitamin D daily plus K2 as recommended by professors and Phd’s research.

Their latest recommendation I believe is 10,000 i.u of vitamin D (with K2) daily, unless you’re on blood thinners. I still can’t understand why this is not being more widely pursued. 🤔

Hope you feel much better soon……

Twaddletop profile image

Thank you Polaris. I am in fact on a blood thinner Apixiban. I already take a tablet called the ICalD3 for Osteoporosis. Right now I feel that if I were a horse, they’d shoot me x

Just to let you know K2 is not K1 and is therefore not a blood thinner

Polaris profile image
Polaris in reply toLynneG

😊 I know LynneG but, when I posted similar a few years ago without this warning and tried to tell them that, I was pulled up by HU ! 😳 The important thing I guess is to take D if you can and get K2 from food - butter, cheese, eggs, etc.

LynneG profile image
LynneG in reply toPolaris

Yep, Which I try to do. But I also take vit K2 liquid supplement drops. Butter, Cheese, Eggs etc I believe are MK4 K2 but supplements are MK 7 K2 obtained from food such as Natto. Both of which we need if can get. Have you read the book the Calcium Paradox. author : Kate Rheume Bleue. Used to be able to get interviews on you tube for free. But the book is worth buying because covers so many health conditions and indepth info

So sorry Twaddletop. It is scary. I wear my mask everywhere. But yesterday, I let my guard down. I think I'll not do that again. Did you have the latest vaccine? I've had 3 with mild fatigue. Not bad. I need my 4th booster. Just putting it off to avoid the fatigue. Id better get it. Hope you feel better soon. 🤞🤞🤞

Sorrh you got covud.

Hooe the anti viral drug helped.

I had it in June . Also supee careful.

Its thd children and adults that dont know they are carrying the vius

Simply wearing masks in crowded areas like trains s snd buses woukd still be helpful to protect others more vunerable i think

You will get some natutal immunity now.

Variants mutating though.

Certainly not gone away.

Was if long after a covid vaccination?

Seem to give good protrction but for diffeent length of times for different people. 🤔

Another lottery

Get well soon

There are no drugs for a virus.

This is false. Antivirals do exist and have for a long time. They attack or inhibit the target virus itself.

Paxlovid is an antiviral that was developed against SARS-Cov-2 (the covid virus). "The active substance PF-07321332 blocks the activity of an enzyme needed by the virus to multiply" ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/...

Tamiflu is an antiviral that attacks the influenza viruses and has been around for years. I've used it myself several times and it helps shorten illness time & severity. fda.gov/drugs/postmarket-dr...

There are very successful antivirals against HIV. I can send references. And they probably exist for other viruses.

hi

I had the antivirals when I had covid, they are called paxlovid and tested negative within 5 days as a result, however really upset my stomach and gave me the worst GERD - still covid has made my auto immune symptoms so much worse and waiting for a 24 hour ecg now down to further complication, like a lot of people on this thread it’s Omicron and had managed to swerve for over 2 years - please be kind when people are struggling especially when they are not well, take care

BeckyDing profile image
BeckyDing

hope you are ok? I was in the same situation - the drugs definitely worked but covid has kicked off and made my auto immune symptoms worse, I would really advise resting up for 4 weeks and don’t too much! I foolishly felt well after a week so was back at work and going to the gym, crashed at week 3 and had to be admitted in a and e and they said I probably did too much and should have kept my heart rate under 140 for 4 weeks and I had reactivated the dormant virus! I still was testing negative though. Take care ❤️

Twaddletop profile image
Twaddletop in reply toBeckyDing

Thank you BeckyDing. There’s no chance of me going to the gym as I’m currently waiting for a spinal procedure which should help me become more mobile. I’m sorry Covid has worsened your AI symptoms and hope they will improve in time x

Please note post has been edited to remove some confrontation discussion of antivirals.

Antivirals are a genuine class of drugs and I do remember reading that they were looked at and evaluated as part of the work done on looking at treatments for COVID

what I don’t understand however is that even with all vaccines and boosters people still get the dreaded virus. Perhaps it’s Co-morbidities or pre existing underlying factors?

So I’m never sure what protection the vaccine actually provides? Please excuse what probably seems like a really stoopid question to you all

Maybe I’m fortunate but I’ve had neither vaccine nor boosters, I regularly am out in crowded places and I haven’t had Covid. Also however it doesn’t frighten me in the least - I did slough off a truckload of fear years ago related to another issue - chronic insomnia

I do however take lots of natural immunity boosters and thank my immune system often. I’m 66 and recently gained huge benefits from changing my diet & intermittent fasting

I haven’t anything like the underlying symptoms that some of you suffer from and I have huge admiration for your tenacity and courage in having to cope with them and live your lives. So again I hope my comments don’t offend you I just wanted to voice a different perspective

"what I don’t understand however is that even with all vaccines and boosters people still get the dreaded virus. Perhaps it’s Co-morbidities or pre existing underlying factors?"

Sadly the vaccine doesn't stop you catching it, it just means your least likely to end up dying or being hospitalised, thats all. I wish the government had spelt that out more. The vaccine isn't a force field. :) A good FFP3 mask will help too.

Twaddletop profile image
Twaddletop in reply toSilverfox2

Thank you Silverfox. I have PsA a particularly nasty form of arthritis that in my case could only be controlled by the use of biologic injections. These injections suppress the immune system leaving you open to just about everything. When out I wear a lanyard explaining my position and feel up till very recently I’d done my utmost to avoid Covid. The pandemic is far from over and I fear many more lives will be lost in the coming winter.

Silverfox2 profile image

Sadly our useless government think otherwise. I watch 'Independent Sage' on youtube every Friday for a proper reporting as how the Pandemic is really going. I recommend it as 'Knowledge is power' as the old phrase goes.

A friend of mine 66-68 yrs old. Has not had any vaccine or boosters. Has mixed freely whenever allowed to. Both she and her husband have not contracted. That cannot therefore be genetic surely or lack of other conditions. Their daughter and son in law have contracted twice brought home presumeably by their daughter from secondary school. But my friend and hubby never caught.

Twaddletop profile image
Twaddletop in reply toLynneG

Hey Lynne there’s something going on that we don’t understand as yet. My ten year old Grandson has brought Covid home from school on more than one occasion. Both he and his Mum have been infected, yet her husband has not. There was a school of thought that it had to do with blood groups at one time but I don’t know if that were proven. I was so desperate to do something “out in the big wide world” again I put myself in harms way. That was the thought behind my initial post. We should try not to be tempted just yet, it’s still dangerous. I’ll have my fifth jab along with the flu jab asap x

LynneG profile image
LynneG in reply toTwaddletop

I don't blame your decision, if you have had no adverse reactions from the vaccines, I would also too, but have been made so ill by my autoimmune being triggered which looks long term now that I daren't.

I heard the Blood Group theory from a friend so didn't have access to read up on . But we are both blood group 0 and have caught and O was the group supposedly protected. I have never had the flu vaccine and never will. Researched years ago. The adjuvant ingredients are not compatible with good health and the amount of aluminium included is a lot and has increased since removing thimerosol (mercury) The trouble is the aluminium attaches to the receptors in the brain that magnesium is intended to attach to. Hence the link between alzheimers and aluminium.

in reply toLynneG

thanks for your comment LynneG. I kinda stuck my neck out there making my own comment 😳😬. But I certainly respect other’s feelings and ways of navigating the virus. To each his own

Yes my husband is 85 and also has received no jabs whatsoever. Has been out & about as much as myself. Another non vaccinated friend contacted the Covid but shook it off within a week.

If big pharma we’re reliant on me they’d have been bankrupt decades ago 😂 because I don’t take any medications and rarely use painkillers. That’s not to say I don’t suffer pain. I’m just a tough nut and look to nutrition, mindfulness and breathing techniques to see me through.

Having said all that I’m very grateful to the Dutch gynecologist who’s helping me with my B12 deficiency.

i think the point of the vaccines is to prevent serious complications. I had it before and after vaccine, and 2nd time was much more bearable. The recovery was about the same and I had to double up on B12

Aww. Bless you. I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you feel better really soon 🙏 I am Covid phobic too. I don't go out. My elderly father passed away last year after catching Covid in hospital. My eldest daughter's heart is permanently damaged after having it. She has had it twice. Many members of my family have had it. Even 3 of my young grandchildren. I have had it too. The fatigue it leaves you with is so draining. Just rest because it is all you can do. I have my 4th booster next week. It makes me angry that people think the pandemic is over. It is far from it. It is being spread by people with that attitude who do not take any precautions. Get well soon 🙏❤️xxx

Sorry to hear you have caught the covid virus i do wish you well soon. I too suffer from P.A., i also have another autoimmune problem "Myasthenia Gravis", which is a life threatening illness, also have diabetes tye 2 which is not to well controlled, so i understand what you are going through. I have always been careful and very rarely go into shops, i am up to date with all my jabs but ive caught the dreaded thing twice now, second time on oxygen and it was worrying. It really annoys me when i see people wandering round no masks, bumping into others without a care in the world, ok they may be healthy and fit and fight these viurs's off but us with underlying illness's have much less a chance of making it and they should be more considerate in my opinion. Thats if i still have a right to an opinion which these days are lessoning because if you do you are some kind of anarchist, who dares to speak out, but when it could be a life or death situation i think we have every right to. Good luck and hope you have a long future ahead of you. regards Jon

So sorry to hear your news. I hope you and your partner recover soon . One blessing is that you have received the antiviral treatment quickly and without a fight which should hopefully give you a milder condition, many people have not received the drugs in time , or at all despite their conditions.

Because of symptoms from my other conditions I had been what I call , ' Living Life at Home ' ( rather than the negative term Housebound) for five months before Covid struck. I was then told to stay at home until the August the next year because of my immunosuppression. My daughter , only aged 18 moved out so she could go to work and see friends causing a forced and abrupt loss. My husband , a type 1 diabetic , ran the gauntlet daily ( and still does) as a school teacher and for over 18 months we had to follow a strict hygiene protocol and not sit near each other or share a bedroom. He still wears a mask and visor at school , despite official objections , even though the kids are now used to being taught by Darth Vader. He caught Covid once , very severely because of his Diabetes , he won't take that chance again.

I have luckily managed to dodge the bullet so far , even though I nursed him during his month in bed. Well , it wasn't luck , it was extreme hygiene , rules and vigilance in all things , no matter what funny looks or snappy comments we might get.

I'm telling you this in the hope that it can send you and others a positive message in how we can all progress as the winter wave of flu and Covid arrives.

I started going out to isolated places or visiting friends in the garden with precautions as soon as I could after my vaccination. My life has changed a lot by not having my children living at home and only coming to stay after they test themselves but it works. My husband and I still dont share a bedroom but with our health issues we both found we are more comfortable anyway. Yet , l feel I have been able to get life back close to the ' New Normal' I had before Covid as I followed strict hygiene and distancing principles anyway before.

Wearing a mask , regular hand washing , distance from others in quiet social spaces, testing and vaccination and cleaning things coming into the home has worked as well as it could so far.

I was worried when I first went inside a public building but I did build my immunity first by going outdoors for walks in places with few people were I could remove my mask and build my immunity up again first.

As many people don't know that their immunity has become naturally lower by being at home , or with masks , because they haven't been in contact with any antigens and bacteria always in the air at all for some time , their body infection response has basically halted. Preparing for the assault with vitamin supplementation, fresh air and gentle exercise in isolated spots is a good tip for all.

I've even been back in shops , and been to the odd show and cafe and gallery using the trick of planning were I sit carefully ( at the back near doors , end of rows, or near windows and doors) and choosing the quietest time available . All my friends are aware of my situation and still test before I visit or they visit me. I always wear a mask , unless eating , and I still take my own cutlery , glass and napkin eating out , it looks odd but its working. I still keep away from big queues and busy areas but it is working . Life can still be a positive one even with these changes.

I hope your not put off venturing out again after your unfortunate experience , you aren't paranoid, the threat is still there, people are not taking care anymore so we need to be extra vigilant , but as long as you prepare for it you can still manage to have a really rich life outside the house in the future. Take care , Bee

Twaddletop profile image
Twaddletop

Thank you so much Bee. I took my eye off the ball I guess. As you say I will go out again once recovered but not to crowded places. I hope you and your husband get through the coming winter without any further issues xx

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toTwaddletop

Unfortunately, you can't plan for everything but it sounds like you are recovering quite quickly and as long as you pace yourself carefully for a month after the virus and keep your fluids and vitamins up you should hopefully keep away from the long Covid symptoms. The breathing exercises done regularly throughout the day really helped my husband , you can look up the technique on YouTube. Sleeping on pillows that keep your shoulders and head raised also helps to stop it settling on your chest at night or causing extra Gerd and nausea.

Had both my Covid and Flu vaccinations and I've just scored a win by proving my neuro and cardio symptoms from my other illnesses are made worse by the low B12 so they have followed the NHS guidelines and made an exception to their Surgery rules and put me on 2 monthly injections. I had got to ten weeks after my loading doses and could hardly walk or talk properly , my Dysautonomia is definitely made worse by the B12 deficiency so it's a huge relief.

Take care

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toTwaddletop

Sorry , meant to say , another good tip for going out to indoor venues . If you put the name of the place you are interested in going to into Google , it shows you a chart which shows the times of day and days of the week it is least busy. You can then choose to book your visit or your meal at their quietest time.

It even works with a spare of the moment trip to a cafe . You can still ring up ten minutes before going and ask them to keep you the table near the door or windows, just explain you have a immunosuppressed person with you and they are usually really accomodating, you can also ask if its possible for your waiter to wear a mask at your table.

A good thing is that quite often you can save money to because theatres , cinemas and restaurants also usually have some sort of discount or deal on their quietest days.

Plus , it gets me out of queueing and packing up in a shop , I go outside when its time to pay and my husband gets that onerous chore.

Twaddletop profile image

That’s a useful tip, thank you.
