Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) therapy for Parkinson’s disease - A preliminary study in China

"The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of FMT on PD. Fifteen PD patients were included, 10 of them received FMT via colonoscopy (colonic FMT group) and 5 received FMT via nasal-jejunal tube (nasointestinal FMT group)."

"In conclusion, the results of this preliminary study indicate that FMT can relieve the motor and non-motor symptoms with acceptable safety in PD. Compared with nasointestinal FMT, colonic FMT may be more effective and may become a new option for the treatment of PD."

A small but impotant study.

Yes, and as they say in the Discussion section:

"Although there are some limitations, the preliminary study confirms the potential clinical value of FMT in PD. In the future, we will design a placebo randomized controlled trial to further study the efficacy and safety of FMT."

Actually, there is already a double-blind, placebo-controlled "FMT for PD" trial taking place in Belgium:

There's a video on YouTube of one of Rob Knight's presentations and for some reason the channel turned off comments and also turned off the transcript - sort of indicating they didn't want it to be easy to find. I have watched several of his presentations and one of the main differences is that that this particular presentation included a bit on a fecal transplant study that transplanted samples from people with PD to a PD mouse model - causing symptoms in the mice. The other difference was a bit on how the obesity epidemic seemed to show a geographic spread from the center of the country outwards.

Ant any rate - great news.

Here's the Rob Knight talk:

I think fecal transplantation could be of real benefit. The most important consideration is who the donor is. I have read, in the past, of a skinny person who had a fecal transplant, and then became obese. They found the donor was obese. One has to make sure the donor doesn't have any other problems that could be transplanted as well.

Hi,

Just to play devils advocate here but wouldn't it be more beneficial to change your gut microbiome thru exercise and diet, instead of injection of some other persons poop?

I'm no scientist... Let that be said but if your injecting good poop into a bad gut wouldn't the goodness wear off quicker than actually making the changes to your gut yourself and changing the overall stasis of your gut?

I dont understand, and am open to peoples explanation and education

Thank you 😀
