Results from this pilot study contribute to a growing body of evidence that PD is not a brain disease, but a systemic metabolic syndrome with disrupted cellular energetics and function in peripheral tissues. The significant impairment of both mitochondrial ATP production and resting metabolite levels in the TA muscles of the PD patients suggests that skeletal muscle mitochondrial function may be an important tool for mechanistic understanding and clinical application in PD patients.

thank you so much for posting this here!!! I have been intuiting this while watching my own symptoms and it makes a lot of sense.

Correcting Mitochondrial dysfunction and increasing cellular energy seems to be the best go forward strategy.

Melatonin, GlyNAC, Ketogenic diet, Niacin should be implemented in daily routine

Too early to say anything.

I have also started nicotinic acid 100 mg post dinner for the past 3 days and sleep quality seems better

This is a very interesting paper.

Since Parkinson’s disease symptoms frequently present asymmetrically, especially at the stage assessed in this study, we performed a secondary analysis to test whether the predominantly affected side was more impacted than the less affected side of the body. An analysis was done on the subgroup who reported their symptoms starting on the right vs. left (all our evaluations were done on the right) (Figure S1A). There was no difference in the ATPmax values when compared in this way, suggesting that the decline in ATPmax was not due to a change in muscle activity based on PD symptoms.

It's becoming more and more obvious that PD is a metabolic disease. The problem is people don't know early enough to change their lifestyle, and even if they do it's hard to do: exercise, fasting, fermented foods, real food...who has the energy for all that? Give me a Hot Pocket, my TV and a pile of supplements instead...

What's interesting for me is that I have been vegan for over a decade. However, I have a sugar/chocolate addiction. So I am betting that this is a kind of diabetes of the brain, which is one way they describe Alzheimers.

PD is referred to as type 3 diabetes by some

I want to find a hypnotist to help me stop my chocolate addiction.

Found the skeletal muscle reference interesting in the below article and the original post...

In conclusion, melatonin was equally effective as alpha-lipoic acid; it exhibited marked antioxidant and anti-aging effects at the level of skeletal muscle in vitro even when it was given in a much lower dose than alpha-lipoic acid.
