My wife has been prescribed Tapentadol 50mg. Looking on the internet for how pain sufferers have found this drug was no use, most replies were from recreational users not genuine pain sufferers.Any comments

Hello

This is a quite new medication, it is a synthetic opiode that treats osteo arthritis. The contra indications seem to be well pronounced.

They are used as a quick push for pain, that is it does not need to build up in the body to give relief although it seems to have a very pronounced problem when it has been taken for long periods.and you could suffer withdrawal and become addicted as with other medications that are the same, it is for medium severe pain as is tramadol another synthetic

When using it be aware it can have severe contraindications and eyes should watch if there are any problems associated with the instruction sheet that will be with the medication

It seems to be effective in the control of pain only and possibly you will need to take NSID with it.

I would imagine it will be about the same as tramadol, although I have not tried this drug as yet, under that instruction your doctor will be able to discuss any problems that you may have with taking it

All the best in pain

BOB .

I had the SR version, Didn't' do much for me, even though I had Oxycodone for breakthrough pain to get me through the switch-over at the time too. I went to it from Tramadol, but moved onto something else pretty quickly - it must have been in just about a fortnight!

I had thought it's real benefit would be the lack of withdrawal from Tramadol, as it works in a similar way (on top of the opiate effect), but I still got some withdrawal which was very reminiscent of the withdraw I got coming off Venlafaxine, only not quite so bad.

Hi Jack, moggiemay here again, I was prescribed Tapentadol at the Pain Clinic 50mg twice a day. I read about it in the Pain Concern News Letter, It is a controlled drug, not a recreational drug and it is for severe pain.I however find that I am quite depressed and it might be due to that as well as Gabapentin. It is Sods Law when you have Chronic pain.

Regards to you and your wife, Moggiemay xx

If there is a side effect with a drug my wife experiences it. She has now stopped Pregabalin and Tapentadol, still got pain but without the added side effects of weight gain, sickness and headaches. Jack

Hi Jack

I stopped taking Tapentadol and Gabapentin on Saturday, I was fed up with the side effects',I took it for Trigeminal Neuralgia. Saw the GP on Monday and got a row. It should be reduced gradually. I am now on Lamotrigine and Fentanyl patches and I have a second MRI scan on the 31st in Glasgow, Take care Love to your wife Moggiemay xx

May have had some of my wife's problems solved on Tuesday morning, she had a heart attack, called an ambulance, she ended up in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh and yesterday had two stents put in her heart valves, she looked and seemed great last night. This is after some months of telling the GP that she had pains from her back to her front, breathless and total lack of energy. They seem at times to look at things in isolation and treated her for Asthma and the pain clinic, I can't help feeling if they had looked at all three together they may have realised it was her heart some time ago. never mind all is well now, but I will be talking to her doctor. I think this site gives you more experienced /factual information than any other Jack

Hi Jack,

I am sorry to hear of your wife having a heart attack, I hope she is better after having the Stents put in. You say she told the GP she had pain in her back and front, did they not do an ECG to check her heart?? You say you think this site gives you more information than any other, I am new on this site, but have found that the "watch dogs " have removed information I put on regarding Antibiotics for the treatment of back pain!!!

I find it difficult to go back and re read previous information from other people because it is not there. I hope you get the information you need Jack.

I wish all goes well for your Lady wife and yourself

Love Moggiemay xx

I would be very interested to read what you have to say in regards the antibiotics and the effects on back problems, if you would send me a message i would be grateful and am adult enough to make up my own mind in regards evidence , for there is something missing in regards to knowledge of what causes flare-up's , best wishes moggiemay

I have read all the relevant comments re Tapentadol but have to say that in my own case they work really well.

I have been on them for just over 3years prescribed for chronic pain.

The dose is 100mg slow release every 12hours as they are for Osteo arthritis, Fibro. and spinal stenosis.

I could not cope without them. With regard to side effects I have gained weight and suffer with some constipation (for which I was prescribed Laxido which is brilliant)

Other than that nothing. I would recommend them.
