Can anyone tell me what and when are we disabled

If you read the WHO definition, its anything that prevents you from leading your life in the same way as you have been doing.

But the line is less clear with government and medical decisions.

I have a broken back. By WHO definition, I cannot live my life as I used to. I've had to give up lots of things I used to do like cycling, swimming, dancing. These were all important things in my life.

Gov and medically, say because I can walk, look after myself, cook, work, I am too able and active to meet their criteria. So I am not considered disabled by them. Even though physically I am.

Hi Zanna with regard to your question and the criteria that is presently used by H M Government do nt worry as I am sure that any dead person would also not meet their criteria and with that in mind he or she would probably also loose out on appeal should they wish to do so.

Been doing some looking into things myself regarding help. To cut it short, if I had a carer, the carer would get help doing my shopping and housework. I don't however qualify. Funny old life the government people have, wonder how many are on full sick pay because they are stressed at work?

I am sorry that you are suffering from societies negativity on pensioners life needs.

Sadly I have been through this several times and now am speechless on what is going on, have you contacted those charities who may be able to help you.Social services has some responsibility to care as has the NHS. One other organization that may be able too help you is AGE CONCERN, i think they have changed their name.

to AGE UK.

Again the wrvs used to assist, although that is much reduced what they can do too help

Further organisations, that were discussed earlier may be able to assist you. If you need a nursing home you may be able to get assistance there through heaven forbid Social Services. Ask your Doctor he will asses your needs and help in getting care you really need. He will contact occupational therapists who will also assess

what your needs are.. He should be able too point you in the right direction and arrange assistance.

Iam sorry that I am unable too help, regarding this it is important that you keep plugging on for the assistance you deserve, At this moment all things have changed your doctor now is responsible for you budget in care, also you council has an allowance for your community care.

I at this time do not know how the system is working as I have a meeting regarding this next week, I will keep you informed, yesterday my wife broke her big toe and the hospital seemed to be coping in this new enviroment.

Look after yourself

BOB.

An adviser filled in the DLA forms for me. With Consultant evidence, GP evidence and photographs the outcome was:

Pain in feet - too excruciating to walk - still your choice not to use your feet - we suggest you crawl.

Bathroom - your choice to fall over and injure and cause scar tissue and damage to your knees and legs. Bathroom is too small to have a hoist installed :(

Kitchen - so you drop hot pans, kettles. Don't use them.

Your choice that you cannot get out of bed (because the pain is too great). You could physically get out of bed if you choose to.

So I am not eligible for mobility or care allowance.

I use taxi's to get about (expensive), order groceries online and delivered to front door - but someone has to pick them up from the front door and take them to the kitchen.

I have meals delivered several times a week.

The Adviser said to appeal. So waiting now - 23 weeks so far.

I have seen a Vascular surgeon to have my feet amputated and the DLA advised you can get artificial limbs in which case you can still walk.

Seen Dermatology, Neurophsyiology, Pain Clinic, Rheumatologist and had nerve ending tests, dopplers, arterial ultrasounds, vein ultrasounds (apparently they are different), xrays and blood tests.

20 years in Management, now totally housebound and no assistance. Hey ho and life goes on.

Hi your story is only all to true, what really sickens me is that genuine sick people are the very ones government after government time and time again fail to help. Where as if you are fit and a good liar you can not only work on the side you can also claim benefit these people are the ones bringing this country to its knees together with the I D S of this world it makes me sad.

I have arthritis in my lower spine it's now in my hips and knees. (i'm now 40, started complaining to my GP when I was 14/15 years old about back pain Now have lost about 4 discs at base of spine, according to my last xray over 10 years ago) I recently re applied for dla, and have been refused which has really peed me off. Like so many others I have chronic pain everyday, can't walk far, can't do many things I always loved doing and they tell me it's my choice. Flipping annoying - I guess the dla bosses would prefer we all commit suicide really so they don't have to pay anything.
