Fentanyl is available in UK.

However - you won't get it straight off unless you are dying of end of life situation.

You will have to work your way through a hierarchy of pain meds.

You are also far too young to be taking such powerful drug for rest of your life.

When you say "bone pain" what do you mean - in a clinical manner?

Cancer of marrow? Arthritis? Ligament strains?

Have you had a MRI?

Please come back ,so we can advise better.

All the best.

HI I have already worked through every pain med out there in the past 10 years so I am becoming desperate. I am simply fishing for feedback on Fentanyl

As for my age I dont think it matters I am in pain now I dont wish to wait 15-20 years or be deemed at the end of my life before I can have something stronger! Can I not have any quality of life now??

Are you a Doctor I was under the impression that Healthunlocked did'nt have health professionals.

No- I am not a doctor or any medical bod.

Fentanyl is an immediate post operative pain medication. Not for chronic pain . There is a raging discussion on this very situation in medical circles.

The muddy water is made worse due to fentanyl and it's derivatives being used to lace lower grade drugs for illegal trade.

It may be used at end of life situations for pain relief before death.

It is a very powerful drug. 80 times more powerful than morphine.

I use fentanyl and I am not at end of life or nobody has told me that although my hubby occasionally threatened it lol but I have been on it for approximately 10 years for chronic arthritis in all areas of my body and it works before that I was taking 8 different types of pain medication so now I just take this and oramorph for occasional break through pain you will find alot of people on here saying you shouldn't take it but if they have never taken it they are just quoting the Internet

Hi Oldnbald, as Madlegs 1 , says if you need more help, you have got to explain your condition in a lot more detail, and what medications you have been taking, before people are going to beable to help and support you , like Madlegs says a Gp will not just prescribe Fentanyl patches, you will atleast have to see a Pain management consultant, and then they may not prescribe them , as there are other medications that are not as strong, with not as many side effects, to try before resorting to something that’s usually given at end of life . That’s why you need to put more detail about your condition and medication taken. Sorry sounds negative but , no medical professional is just going to prescribe you Fentanyl patches.

I have spinal cord injuries and secondary conditions, osteoporosis and kyphosis - and to Lee my pain at bay fentanyl patches just didn’t do it - must’ve been the dose. I’m now on MST twice a day - and that mostly keeps my pain away but you need a GP willing to prescribe opiates at a dose worth having.

in reply toMSTKing

Is MST not just a brand of morphine? I have been given high dose of that on and of for a long time with no effect

there are lots of different types of opiates. Each acting in sighty different ways. MST is long acting so that’s why it’s often given twice a day. That overarching pain relief twice a day helps particularly with pain during the night. So it’s worth finding out if opiates could help but there’s not much in the way of pain relief that works for me, anyway.

Other than opiates.

I took fentanyl for approximately 6 months. Increasing doses which did help the pain but had a major negative effect on my psychological health The patches were supposed to last several days but wore off more quickly leaving me scrambling to persuade my GP to allow me more. I hated what it was doing to me but found it incredibly hard to stop. Addicted. It took me months to get over the trauma of what happened to me on this drug. This however is my personal experience. I feel that it is a highly dangerous medication which should only be used for end of life care. It was prescribed by a young inexperienced doctor who did want to help my constant debilitating pain.

It is about a 100 X stronger than morphine !

Best of luck with finding something that works but it not a route that I believe to be safe
