Seroma advice

Hi, I had spinal surgery last September, I was rushed back in hospital 2 weeks later with a back infection. They flushed me out with antibiotics and put 42 stitches in my back. After that I had lot's of e.coli infections until December. Since then I've had 2 MRI scans with contrast and a CT scan. I have a seroma that I was told would desolve ,but now has encased itself. I am waiting for another operation to remove it and be flushed out with antibiotics again. I'm in so much pain 😫 as leg pains came back, my lower back pain is really painful. So 3 operations in a year is not good. Has anyone else developed a seroma after their operation 🤔

Oh no that sounds awful. I have had 5 back ops. I developed a seroma after one but it desolved by itself. So sorry I cannot help but just wanted to wish you good luck.

Thank you. Mine won't desolve as it has encased itself, hence another operation

Omg! I feel terrible for you! I can imagine the pain you are going through ! I to had back surgery a year ago, I am still having pain in my back on the opposite side of where it was originally! With an added bonus! Both of my feet are pained everyday! They swell up after being on them for just a couple hours. But it’s actually better if I stay on my feet! Bc as soon as I sit they get worse! Insurance has denied a cat scan 4 times since 2019!! I’m outraged! But to your question no I have not heard of your issue. However it makes me wonder what the heck is going on with mine!?!? I feel like surgeon is only concerned that the screws and cage are in place ! That’s it .

I wish you a successful outcome. I will pray the doctors hands work precisely and efficiently with your next surgery. God bless🙏

HiThank you for your kind words, I hope you get sorted. My consultant said you have no screws loose and everything else is fine. He used a 11 month old MRI scan when did the fushion last September, now he says he doesn't use old MRI scans. I've suffered with pain for 10 months saying it would dissolve, now it's encased itself and has to be removed. X

So sorry you’re been treated like this, my main concern with what’s happening to you is there’s no urgency to operate? If you need to be flushed with antibiotics again plus have the seroma removed surely that’s an emergency? When I was in hospital after last spine surgery a patent had her spine washed out 2x due to infection plus as I was being discharged she was in theatre having it done a third time!

To leave you waiting is bordering on negligence, in my option?

Can you ring the surgeon’s sec to find out where you are on the list? Ring the operating list dept too, they’ll have some idea!

What part of the country or world are are?

Wish I could help but not sure what to say….apart from sorry. Big hugs 🤗

Keep us updated please, lots of theatres shut in Aug simply due to staff holiday. Keep everything crossed it will be asap in September. However if you start getting any symptoms that don’t feel normal, high temperature, extra or new numbness, pain etc go to A&E.

Big 🤗

Yes I know, my consultant is a pediatrician so he is doing the kids spine during the holidays so they can get back to school. He also does degenerative disc disease which I have., so that's why September.

My Consultant specialises in Scoliosis too, he said the children are 1 of the main reasons he became a Spine Consultant. They bounce through surgery & it’s so rewarding to see them start to live a more normal life.I have Degenerative Disc Disease too, think it’s far more common than I realised.

Does make sense that your procedure is in September especially as you know the reason.

My condition need’s close monitoring, however my appointment should be in August but there’s no clinics so earliest is September. Let’s hope Sept., is lucky for both of us. But update the post please as I’m concerned you do get the procedure asap. 🤗

I had spinal fushion 6 years ago then last September another 4 discs fused onto the existing cage, so all bottom 6 discs fused. I hope the operation worked and I don't need anymore surgery but the disc's can wear any time. After having 3 back operations in one year had enough.

You’ve been through so much.. that’s a lot of surgeries & will take you time to adjust to things. Sorry, I understand my discs have prolapsed constantly like a domino effect after fusion. Whatever we do doesn’t seem to stop this happening, wish there was an easy answer… take care
