Knee pain in 5 year old

My child has been having knee pain for the past year off and on. The pain brings him to tears and he is inconsolable. The pains have been more frequent and are now several times per week. My son will be up at night for hours crying. It is so sad to see him like that.

Has anyone had similar experiences and found a cause for this?

We've seen two doctors so far. I'm going to schedule an appointment with a third.

Hello Rosie. Sorry but I've no experience of this.

However, have the doctors you've seen so far ruled out Osgood Schlatters disease and Sinding-Larsen and Johansson syndrome? I understand both can affect children. Perhaps a third opinion is the way forward or ask for a referral to an MSK consultant.

Has he been doing a lot more sport over the summer holiday? Football club perhaps or gymnastics?

Oh I’m so sorry, I really feel for you and your poor son . I think an urgent referral is on the cards , to the appropriate specialist consultant . I do hope you and your son find an answer and help very soon. All my love. xxx

I remember pain in my groin when I was about that age and not being able to walk. And my son had a lot of pain, more than me, when he was that age. From the age of three he used to say his legs were too tired to walk, he didn't know that it was pain he was feeling, he didn't have the words.

It took a few more years to figure out that he was hypermobile and had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome hypermobility type.

It might be worth reading through this took kit from the RCGP and maybe going through it with your GP.

An idea only - Ask for your child’s vitamin D and B12 bloods to be checked, both are linked to walking problems. (don’t expect a Doctor to agree.)High dose Vitamin D3+K2 helps strengthen bones.

Knee pain problems can be turned around with a High, but safe doses of vitamin D3(+K2)

Anything neurological/nerves from head to toe check your B12 bloods. Active B12 blood test is best.

Please look into these safe vitamins.

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin.

Many are lacking in vitamin D these day, but Drs rarely check vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Many people with bone or aching complaints don’t get enough enough sunshine uptake.

As I said- an idea only. 🤗

I had the same problem some sixty years ago. I can still remember crying at night and my mother wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel and placing it on my knees to try and ease the pain. The Doctors at the time put it down to growing pains. I would suggest you see a GP and I hope your son gets some help. Kind Regards
