I think it really depends on what you’re taking it for. I, for example, take a low dose (10mg) at night to help me sleep better with the pain that I have. It also helps with some numbness that I get in my skin. I only take it as I need it so can’t really comment on how it may be if taken regularly. However, I know people who have taken it regularly & found that they had memory problems, fatigue etc because of it. But personally, I would say, try it out & see if it helps with what you’ve been prescribed it for & keep an eye out for any changes that you’re concerned about.

Hopefully you make a decision that’s best for you. Good luck 😊

As chronically_steph_ says it depends why you have been prescribed it.

Under about 50 mgs a day it helps pain and sleep. Over around 75 mgs it is used as an anti depressant.

If you take it at night, just before you go to sleep, then you can minimise any drowsiness. But for me 10mg doesn't make me drowsy.

10mgs is the usual maintenance dose. Take just before bed and you shouldn't feel drowsy.

I have been on a low dose for many years, it helps with my pain, I take it at night, yes there is a bit of drowsiness and memory can be poor, but weighing it all up I would still continue taking it, try it and see you can always stop if it does not help you, also talk it over with your dr or nurse and get their advise

I tried this for night time pain and it didnt help so I dropped it. Then I read somewhere in some drug information that it can take a few days use to work so you should persist. So I feel I didn't really give it a proper chance myself.

I have been taking 30mg Amatriptilyne in the evening for about a year now for PHN pain. It does nothing for the pain but helps me sleep which would probably be difficult without it particularly as I have been a lifelong insomniac. Can’t attribute any particular side effects to it as I also take a lot of meds for my heart - AF and HF and my quality of life has deteriorated because of the PHN.

I've taken it once for my coccyx pain - that was before I considered physio. It didn't touch the pain. Really didn't like it, felt all groggy like jet lagged, and that was one dose, not sure of the strength but it was a low dose. My GP said take it before bed to help sleep when my coccyx pain is bad, well I didn't sleep and when I woke i felt out of it. I don't do well with things like codeine either so I'm always cautious.

I've been taking 30/50 mg for over 3 years for pain and it helps me stay asleep longer although pain does break through now again. I take it at about 6.30 p.m and go to bed around 10/10.30 p.m. as otherwise I find I'm drowsy in the morning when I wake up. You need to take it for awhile for it to work properly. My GP told me that it won't put you to sleep but will make you sleep longer once you are asleep. I hope this helps.

U get any side affects with it

I also take gabapentin so can't really say. I've put on weight but that could also be because I'm not as mobile as I was and both medications list weight gain as a side effect. My mouth is also a bit drier than previously but getting some sleep outweighs this for me.

I was prescribed it 6 months ago to help me sleep as I have bone on bone OA in my right hip. Doctor said try it, take 1 or 2 tablets (10mg), try taking it at different times in the evening to see what suit me best. So started with 1 tablet as I went to bed, slept well but had trouble waking up. So took it with my evening meal (6-7pm) got sleepy about 9pm slept well and woke up fine. I don't take it every day as I use it when in chronic pain and some times I take 2 if I don't need to get up early. If I take it for 5-7 days I find I get brain fog but I'd say give it a try, a good nights sleep can really make a difference.

Hi LlSaprag,

One for the most popular leaflets that we at Pain Concern have produced in recent years is on amitriptyline. You can find it at painconcern.org.uk/amitript....

I hope this can answer some of your queries.

I have been on it for over ten years 25mg which I take just before I go to sleep every night. I was prescribed it originally as the consultant neurologist was not sure if I had fibromyalgia or needed help with sleep for sleep apnea. Can't really tell you if it works, though I do sleep reasonably well, just have breakthrough nerve pain around fingernails between gabapentin doses at night and have several other illnesses, but had and have no side effects that I can report over the years; taking less than 50mg does lessen any risk of side effects occurring .

Hi

I think it is a wonderdrug for pain. I take 2 x 10mg last thing at night for muscle relaxation for my pain. 10mg was too little, and 25mg left me still groggy in the morning. As long as I can find a comfortable position in which to sleep, I am almost guaranteed a good night. A (very) slight downside is I am extra stiff in the morning as I haven't moved for hours. I've even been in hospital and saw another patient DEMANDING her usual dose of amitriptyline from the doctor. She made such a fuss she got it in the end! Do try it.
