Pregnancy following operations

Hi,

I have recently had a microdiscectomy to unimpinge my nerve at l4/l5. My lower back itself is not in great condition. I have had 4 lots of previous surgery on my abdomen for endometriosis including a bowel resection and one to fix internal bleeding which has not helped. I also have PCOS and micro collitis.

I have 2 children but we are considering whether it is possible for another. We both have good jobs, house, cars etc. But I have unpleasant pregnancies due to my scar tissue and was high risk. I had SPD and my back essentially gave in. I also had sepsis with my first and repeated infections with my 2nd. I have never been advised not to have anymore, although maybe that just goes without saying.

Has anyone had more kids post surgery? Was you back able to manage? I don't want to be back to square one and needing more surgery as it is likely I will need further surgery for my endo in the future.

I just want personal experiences, I will be asking my consultant too.

Thanks :)

It is up to you. I am currently pregnant. Nearly due, thank God. I was knocked down by a car last year and sustained some injuries. 10 months later after i found out i was pregnant.

My back , pelvis and neck isn't good. I had no surgeries before the pregnancy. I may have to after as i will be reassessed or I think i have fibro.

I'm in more pain at the end of pregnancy and can't take anything so it's no fun. My mental state isnt good with the pain but you know yourself.

My daughter was born 3 yrs after having a Laminectomy & discectomy L5/S1 which was very successful operation, pregnancy was great. However at 6 months old lifted her out of bath & that was it my back “went” prolapsed disc again at L5 & L4. She’s 20 yrs old, no other children & had 12 operations since she was born on my spine. It’s not the pregnancy that I’d be worried about but caring for your children if something happens.

Honestly the only reason I didn’t have more children was there wasn’t suitable time between being in pain, incontinent or recovering from an operation! In my dreams I thought i’d have 3... my little miracle’s not the cause of my pain but I feel so guilty not being able to even lift her when she fell....think about it & get advice from a good Obs/Gyn & Spine Consultant. Good luck whatever you decide, I loved being pregnant!!! X

Thanks for your reply.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you have to have repeated surgery? I am hoping to go back to exercising and to avoid more surgery etc.

I do worry about that, thankfully I have great support from my husband and his family.

I will, thanks :)

X

Devils_Advocate hope you don’t mind but i’ve sent you message instead of putting what happened on here. Think sometime’s personal experience’s with surgery can frighten other people however your question’s quite specific, Anne x
