Waldeyer's tonsillar ring

About 1 1/2 years ago I had a localised pain at the back of my throat (Waldeyer's tonsillar ring) . It hurt especially when eating some sour foods, hot fluids, some sweet foods, and particlarly walnuts, and also on its own - it is a very localised burning pain - like a sore. Anyway I went to a doctor and he saw what he said was a reddened area with a white/yellow spot in the middle and told me it was a bacterial infection. This shortly disappeared. However, the pain is still there as before, more than 17 months after, again caused by the same stimuli or on its own. I went to two ENT doctors and they could find nothing, likewise my dentist could find nothing . The original doctor could only see a bit of scar tissue where the infection was. The flare ups seem to be worse after sport, so maybe a blood vessel is compressing some nerve. It is debiliating - wish I was dead. It robs me of sleep sometimes and well maybe there is someone who is cleverer than my docs out there . Thanks

Hi

Please don't wish that you were dead. Have you got anyone that can help you emotionally? I wouldn't have been able to get through half my problems without my family and friends and everyone on here. Someone else will probably pop up soon to give you better advice than me. Take care Lynne

Thanks Lynne - unfortunately I live alone - the reason I drank a little too much last year was because of the depression and pain - but at least I've stopped

Dont wish to be dead.. Its an amazing chance to be here, remember that! I know pain and feeling sick doesnt make you feel like so, but it could be worst, i would suggest you to take care of yourself, like.. Idk more self care maybe or something like that! When you will win your battle about this , life will gets better and even something else happen, dont let nothing put you down! Keep going! Ive been tru depression and all that and the only thing i could tell you is love yourself more, dont destroy it.

Hi Danubian, just out of interest what pain relief do you take/been prescribed? Have you had a CT scan or MRI at all?

Danubian profile image
Danubian in reply toBella_11

Well the doctors could find nothing and prescribed nothing. I prescribed myself beer! Stopped now. No CT or MRI scan of this area.

Thanks Bella - Ithink I may get and MRI done -

I think it’s worth investigating. Beer sure tastes better than pain meds but neither are the answer long term I guess. It could well be nerve damage, hopefully you can get to the bottom of this as pain just ruins your life :(

Be nice to have any updates as to how you’re doing. Good luck! X

Thanks Bella - lastest update - pain still there - dentist recommended an oral surgeon - she could find nothing :-(.

diagnosis is in - pterygoid hamulus bursitis

What you describe is an infection of the tonsils, or a mild case of tonsillitis; however, that area can become cancerous, so please, because you have so much pain, insist on further exploration of the area, blood tests, scans etc. Don't try to second guess something that is causing you so much pain you wish you were dead.

It is not tonsillitis, has no characteristics of tonsillitis since it is a very localised pain which is mostly not there but last for a few seconds or minutes, particularly when eating certain foodstuffs. I'm sure an ear nose and throat professor would recognise tonsillitis. Besides I tried tonsiltis antibiotics - and they did not help

in reply toDanubian

Yellow on a tonsil IS tonsillitis! LOL That's how you describe it... so yes, it would be localised if it's just in one tonsil. Have you ever had it? Tonsillitis that is. It doesn't have to be the all singing and dancing feverish, aching, can't swallow a thing kind. No such thing as tonsillitis antibiotics, just good old penicillin.

You seem to be quite clued up on all the medical terms that's for certain. Maybe it's all in your head?

Danubian profile image
Danubian in reply to

There is no yellow on tonsil or anywhere else for the last 15 months. I did not state that it is on the tonsil but Waldeyers .. ! I had tonsillitis on one side a few years and this is very different - a very localised pain: besides tonsillitis is a dull pain which is always there. My pain comes for a few seconds and is sometimes triggered by certain foods. But I'm sure your diagnosis of tonsilitis is better that 3 ENT doctors, one dentist and 2 normal doctors.

Danubian profile image
Danubian in reply to

Yes penicillin is used for tonsilitis and I used penicillin, so that is what I call tonsillitis antibiotics LOL! So if you read my post - I have seen a few specialists and found no answers - and you think they all missed simple tonsillitis? Oh well fuck the specialists. I'll just come on here and ask you!

Cancer would be seen by the ENT doctor after 14 months pain I am sure. Two doctors said no - no cancer - all looks good. I don't think it is glossopharyngeal neuralgia - too mild I think, its not a shooting or electric pain. Post herpetic neuraligia - maybe. Post infectious neuralia. Haven't got the slightest clue.

in reply toDanubian

No, it wouldn't. My old landlord had cancer BEHIND his tonsil, so unless an ENT specialist has X-ray vision, he/she wouldn't have found it. To be fair he did have a huge lump on the side of his neck, but cancer is a crafty so-and-so, it hides.

But, I would also go down the reflux route as Hidden has suggested, having had problems with that myself, it causes sore throats, loss of voice and other throat issues due to the acid.

I would also try some CBT, it could be a case of mind over matter too, you're so used to the pain that you think it's there and it isn't. The brain is a powerful tool!

Thanks - you got me worried - full blood count at beginning of year showed nothing -and I've had this shit 16 or so months - surely if it was the big C I would have known? definately not acid reflux since it is localised and responds to stimili and Ive had reflux - my gastrointestinal problems were caused by mind but this is different singe it flares with some foods!

in reply toDanubian

That's okay, but worth following up on in the future if things don't improve. It isn't always obvious isn't cancer, it hides in the weirdest of places until it's too late (not wanting to scare you, but best safe than sorry) pain that won't go away no matter what, is just one symptom. It doesn't always show up in blood work either, tricky little swine that it is! But, that's the worst case scenario.

Reflux can cause all kinds of weird and wonderful side effects, one being a sore throat or sharp pain, it isn't all about heartburn and indigestion (I have it, confirmed by an endoscopy 5 years ago) so it may be worth pursuing an endoscopy.

you got me really worried now. I know I have GERD and doctors diognosed me with somatic and anxiety disorder. Just increased :-(

in reply toDanubian

Calm down, deep breaths, it's better to know about these things than not. Have you got medication for your reflux/GERD? If not, why not?

Danubian profile image

Because my doctor did not prescribe any drugs. - Should I ask him why not? (Serious) Ok on Tuesday I went to my dentist, he found nothing, he refered me to oral doctor/surgeon. On Wednesday this doctor found nothing and stated unequivocally that my oral region is definately free of the big C. Obviously even if she did not have X-ray vision, she knows the rate of growth of big C in the oral region. She also ruled out nerve pain.

Whatever Jayne - thanks for suggesting doing something about the GERD - have a good weekend

Distraction my friend... otherwise u will drive yourself to insanity.I know.. Ive already driven there and have done many roundtrips. Your prior posts mentioned a gastroenterologist...that's the direction ID be going and have with stuff that I thought was ENT related but turned out to be gastro related.

I also went the acupuncture and Chinese medicine direction. Couple years back I was having a spleen issue. If I went to a hospital with this.. they would have made me into a human guinea pig.Got these creepy little black bb looking pills, told take 10 a day, and PRESTO.. my issue was gone.Ive had really good luck in the past with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, plan on going that route again if the docs cant figure out my latest and greatest med mystery, lol

If I was a betting person Id say its GERD/reflux that ur getting these problems... which then lead to no sleep and etc.

Best of luck to ya..keep fighting till ya get answers.

Thanks but I don't thinks so - the gastro intestinal problems came much latter. And from GERD comes a sore throat mornings from acid. I'm talking about localised pain at one a single point which is sometimes there on its own and many times triggered by sweet or sour foods, hot drinks, carbonated beverages, especialy beer. I can't distract myself from pain. If that were possible noone would be takin' morphine and all the other shite! Had my stomach scoped and all the blood tests done. Acupuncture has not helped.

Sorry for my imput, hope u get answers to help u.

The lack of pain comes from a single point-wise location. The location which was orignally a bacterial infection at this location. So it ain't GERD - I got that too! GERD is nothing compared to this. I can live wiv GERD

My daughter was just diagnosed with glossopharyngeal neuralgia after 18 months of pain after she had her adenoids removed. I would recommend you see a neurologist whom specializes in this.

Danubian profile image
Danubian in reply toMJBJDJ

went to many doctors and neurologists - all lazy gits. One oral surgeon took pity on me, and really worked hard - and put in the hours and effort - finally got a 99.999% diagnosis - pterygoid hamulus bursitis - conservative measures appear to be working! Finding a good doctor is like winning the lottery! I hope your daughter gets better. Will pray for her!
