Way forward

My 52 year old daughter has recently moved area and is finding it impossible to access proper pain care. Her pain comes primarily from the many complications from surgery performed by a rogue gynaecologist who was sacked and thrown out of the BMA. He died whilst the police were compiling a criminal case against him. My daughter received a small amount of compensation but he left her barren and childless. She suffers terrible pain from adhesions, has psoriatic arthritis and other conditions. She was well looked after previously and under the care of a psoriatic rheumatologist. Since moving there is no care and the g p keeps taking away her medication with no discussion and no alternative. Recently she wrote a letter explaining what led up to her predicament. She had no reply but he did take away her fentanyl patch leaving her climbing the walls over Easter. She was in so much pain she had to cancel a precious dental appointment. Is this normal and how does she move forward please. Sorry it's so long.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughters difficulties, to take away her main source of pain relief is pretty drastic to put it mildly, I know how important it is to be pain free and in this day and age to actually stop her medication without good cause is pretty grim, unless she has other issues like heart problems I can't understand why it has been removed, the fentanyl patches are very good for pain relief but sometimes doctor's will say that these patches can mask other symptoms, so perhaps she needs to ask for some clarification to ask why they have been stopped, if no medical reason is given to her she should push for a second opinion,I'm not sure if the costing of this medication will affect her local health authorities or for other reasons, but this needs to be looked at, and tell her to be more forceful and that she's not happy that her health is now being affected because of her medication being stopped, it's a fine balancing act and trying to navigate the medical profession is a nightmare, I wish her all the best, and a positive outcome, thanks.

Thankyou so much for fulsome post. I Will pass on your thoughts. She and we have been fighting her corner for some years but never had to fight a g p for care. Thank you.

Google "Thomas Myers". Google "fascia". I would suggest that your daughter sees an Alexander technique teacher.

I'm so sorry to hear what is going on with your daughter. Coming from another person who suffers everyday in severe chronic pain.

I don't understand why he would take her off cold turkey this could cause her to have such issues and withdrawals. When any Dr. does this it could cause her to have a stroke or heart attack. I know first hand, I was on oxymorphone 40mg 2 times daily along with 4- 30mg oxicodone. My Dr. took me off everything putting me on one 50mg fentyal patch. I went into severe withdrawal. My blood pressure sky rocketed, I had to be rushed to the ER cause of this. I was on the verge of a stroke my BP was 278/198. The ER Dr. couldn't believe my pain Dr. did this. He accutally called my Pain Clinic and asked them if they were trying to kill me! I left that pain clinic needless to say. I hope your daughter finds a clinic that will keep her on her current pain medications.

Wow that appears to be a strange regime of oxy as this medication is normally given twice a day only . It's a 12 hour slow release drug given twice daily giving you a 24 hour cycle . I was taking a 20 mg in the middle of the day as I thought it would spread out how long they are effective for . I was severely told off by the surgery pharmacist as she explained how it works and not having spikes in your bloodstream . That's why reading your post was a little confusing .

Thankyou for your reply. This one g p seems to have a fixation about reducing any medication which could be addictive. My daughter has an appointment with pain clinic in July and despite this her g p seems determined to jump the gun on their recommendations. Very difficult when there is no alternative practice in the area.

Hi what a terrible story! Is there only 1 gp at her surgery or is it a group practice? If the latter then she needs to see a different and better doctor. x
