Chronic pain

Hi! I’m 18 years old and I’m suffering from back pain. It started with just my back and now it’s gone to my whole body. It hurts to lay down to sit or even to just open a door. I have tried many types of pain killers and they don’t help as much as I’d like. I have tried heat, messaging mats, and osteopath. I don’t want my whole life dependent on pain killers and appointments. My mum has sloppy joints which is what they think I suffer from. I just need some tips on managing the pain. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

You need a proper diagnosis rather than trying to treat an unknown problem, ask your GP for an Orthopaedic referral.

I am working on that. I need to find something to help deal with the pain until I get in to the gp. The simplest tasks hurt to a extreme amount and it’s hard to carry on day to day activities.

Have you tried vitamin d ,cod oil, tiger balm all from health shop but you do need to speak to your GP

No I haven’t tried any of those but I’ll give it a go. I’m planning to see my gp in a couple weeks

Ask GP to test Vitamin D first before you supplement. You may be found to have a deficiency and need a prescribed, specific dose.

Also ask GP to test B12, Folate and Ferritin.

Do any of your painkillers contain codeine ? If so, this causes constipation which itself can put pressure on circulation & spine.

Yea I have realized that. I use to take painkillers with codien but stopped due to the complications it was causing. I’ll make sure to mention those tests. Thanks for the recommendation! X

The pains you are describing sound just like the pains & difficulty I had when my bowel was full!

I was given Diazepam tablets by A&E for 'muscle spasm ' and sciatica. At first I couldn't walk or sit at all. I'd sipped some warm water with a little bicarbonate of soda, brought up trapped wind and passed trapped gas. Some mobility returned.

The Diazepam helped to relax muscles and I was OK next morning ( if you see what I mean!)

The full bowel had put pressure on the spine and caused pain and temporary loss of all mobility. Mobility was already poor due to lots of Arthritis, circulation & other problems so I wasn't sure what was happening - trapped nerves possibly.

If you regularly use a stool softener such as Lactulose medicine and drink plenty of water this should releive side effect of codeine.

Codeine can cause constipation, dry stools & even stop bowel movements unless taking extra water and a good softener/laxative.

Is your Mum under a Consultant? Have you considered phoning the Consultant 's secretary and asking how long you would wait to be seen if referred - say how much pain you are in. Or ask your Mum to phone and ask to speak to her Consultant for you? What investigations did your Mum have , MRI scans? Where I am you only get them via A&E or Consultant clinics. GPs can't refer direct. They have you to refer to Specialist .

You could also ask GP to refer you to a Pain Clinic but not sure if they would see you before seeing other Consultant of if if would be any help. Mine wasn't but have read on here that in other areas some people have good help/results.

I’m trying to. My parents are working on getting me into something to help with the pain. It’s jusg going to take a bit since I work a lot.

Have u considered alternative medicine ? If ur not getting results from ur current doc find one that fits u better n ur needs.hope u find the help u need..ur too young to be suffering..I know..I was u once at the same age n still suffering alot years later.

What did you do to help cope with the pain. What kind of alternatives would you try?

Did the pain start suddenly or did it come on slowly? Did you have a cold/flue shortly before?

Do you have tight muscles or are things just tender?

What is your body temperature?

Have you an infection virus or bacterial? Google "erythromycin anti inflammatory".

May be worth persuading doctor to try erythromycin for a week.

I haven’t had the flu but now I’m getting excruciating pain in my stomach and I keep throwing up. I think I’m going to the gp today or tomorrow.
