My feet started to swell around 3 weeks ago, now my whole leg and half way up my bum and front to my tummy? Has anyone suffered please and if so what happened? I have had stomach scan today and he just said I've found nothing that would cause your legs to swell?! Help please

Sally I'm not a Dr you should ask him and if he doesn't know what is causing it. Please get a second opinion. It sounds to me like your swelling is. Caused from water retention. If that's water than you need a water pill. Which will cause you to get rid of swelling. Now you will go to bathroom a lot. Let's why you are told to take in morning so you aren't up all night. As I said before please see Dr if he won't help. Get a different Dr who will tréat you right. Sometimes talk to other patients. Helps love susie jo1948

Hope to here from you soon. Will hope things are better. Love susie jo1948

Dear Sally

As the previous comment says: "Get a second or third opinion". They just want to get rid of patients on the easiest and cheapest way. Do not stop: Take someone with you.

Your health is important to YOU. Stay calm, just give the facts.

Be strong Sally - we are women and we can really be strong in these times.

With love

Hi Sally. I was out with my sister yesterday and she told me her son in law's father is in hospital with this very condition, he has fluid from the waist down, including his private parts. He is a Sports therapist and normally very toned. It seems to be something to do with his kidneys. I don't have enough information, however have you rung 111 or thought of going to A&E. If this isn't normal for you it needs more investigation. Please take extra care. X

Can't believe I replied and it's dissappeared. Thabkyou for your comment. It seems like we are the only two thar have ever had this as nout on Internet are all about swelling aboce knees! I had kidneys scanned yesterday and all he said the Dr that did ultrasound was that nothing found would cause swelling!? So would love to know what the man you talk of has done and what they said caused it please x

I am an interloper from the NRAS site...no idea how I landed here.

But do get your lymphatic system checked.... I don't want to scare you but swellings like that should be checked immediately

Hi Sally . I messaged my niece and they were doing a kidney biopsy today but have found a clot in an artuary near his heart. It should be treatable with medication. He has been in hospital for a few days now. When I hear more I will let you know. When I saw your post I couldn't believe the coincidence as I have never heard of this before. Sally I do think you should be having tests done to find the cause. X

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

I understand he had been working out for sometime and decided to take himself of his blood pressure tables including a water tablet without his GP's knowledge, this has caused a protein in his blood that caused the clot. He went to his GP who sent him to A&E they kept him in. He had to wait all day for a bed. None of this may relate to you, but a visit to A&E mabe best to find the cause of your problem. Xx

in reply to Gigi71

Hi Sally. Have you had tests on your heart. Sometimes swelling can be due to heart failure.

Hi Gi-gi thankyou so much for caring. The strange thing is I was on a tablet for my wee abd stopped it because I was only going perhaps at mist 4 times a day when drinking all day! I haven't told them but just after stopping I get all this. And heart well last year I was kept in for what they thought was a heart attack, pain indy chest and pain in my jaw. My blood pressure was all o er the place where mine is always around 110/70 which is on the lower side it had gone to 139/92. They let me home after 3 days

Well ibe had the same pain a few times but on oliday in Yarmouth around 2.5 weeks ago it came in worse than ever. I just St up and pray it will go away. I have no idea what causes it but it stays for a good few seconds abd repeats about ten times.

So possible it could be heart related. I will try and get an appointment tomo and tell Dr all of it. Can you let me know how it all goes with him. Xxc

Hi Sally. We are told not to stop any blood pressure meds including water tabs without direction from our doctors. Please tell them and get yourself there Soon as possible especially with any heart problems. All the very best to you. Xx

Hi all and Gigi. I went to doctors but had a really bad time of it. Sorry not replied sooner.

I showed her my legs which are shiny and tight all the way up. She pressed pm my thighs and because they don't pit she said you have a little bit in your ankles but nothing in thighs and bits etc. I said you can see there swollen. But she said no there not! She then said about results of stomach scan that I have a shrunk gall bladder but spent most of the time talking to screen when she knows I'm deaf and have hearing aids!! So didn't hear much other than shrunk and no stones but tissue growing??!!

She then said that the gastro specialist I saw in June, I said no June last year!! No I have the copy of letter sent to you. I argued that I saw her a year ago and she got quite irritated!! She said she said see how she goes on tablet, I said that was urology and she snapped no gastro, I'm looking at the letter!!! I said Dr what tablet then and she spat out Lansaprozale!! I replied why?? I've been on it 4 years!!! With that she said I will refer you back to pain management. And I asked if I should keep taking the water tablet she said yes, you said yourself it's not working!!

Sorry for length of message but I got quote upset. She saw my legs last week and straight away said emergency scan needed but now apparently I just have a bit of swelling anf really just stop wasting her time.

I have decided to get an appointment with the other Dr even though this Dr has always been fantastic and she is my care plan manager as I'm on morphine for chronic pain. Plus she said I want to weigh ypu and I was weighed about 5 months ago and was just under 14 stone and now 105 kilo 16.5 stone. She said you need to look into your eating! ' everyone has commented about the size of my legs but they're OK not swollen.

I have lost all faith in her. And I needed to up my morphine as it's not working well anymore and didn't bother to ask. Xxx

Oh dear dear Sally what an awful appointment and very upsetting for you. I do hope you have an appointment with the other doctor, is it possible to take someone with you, or failing that write down you problems. They need to properly address all your concerns and knowing you have a hearing problem explain straight to your face. If you feel worse just go to A&E for a thorough examination. Sally please take care of yourself. X

Sallyk42 in reply to Gigi71

Thankyou Gigi. I was upset at he attitude and find the thought of going to her again somewhat frightening. I have never been a hypercondreact spelling sorry. I never went to Dr's until I got I'll abd now sadly pretty regular. I think it's so rude talking to a computer screen honestly!! I will go to see him on Monday and I'm going to ask for a copy of my notes too. Hopefully I then can find out exactly what is wrong with me xxx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

I can understand, we are not medically trained and very vulnerable when unwell. I've had many health issues for years and have noticed the difference in care nowadays, they are just so overworked. If she isn't a senior doctor in the practice, you can always write in to the senior doctor explaining your concerns. I'm sure like me you would sooner not have to bother them, we don't have a choice. All the best for Monday, I just hope this appointment goes better for you. My nieces father in law is having a stent fitted next week and will hopefully be okay to come home and keep taking the meds they prescribe for him. Good luck x

Thank-you hun. I hope he's OK

I apparently have angina they tool me in after what I thought and they did that I'd had a heart attack last year. But apparently angina and that was what I wanted to tell her I've had the pain a lot in last few weeks.

The Dr that owns the practice well there's two has moved to my one and had to see him while she was away he was lovely and thankfully got to the problem straight away and cured it. So I hope he will be a tad nicer.

No No one on their right mind wants to go there but sadly our bodies say different. Thankyou Gigi for listening. Have a lovely rest of weekend xxx

Gigi71 profile image

Hi Sally. You seem to have a lot going on and yes you need a GP to listen, I hope tomorrow's appointment goes better for you. Certainly the frustration of not been listened to, is very stressful and you don't need that with your problems, you just want respect and clarity and a way forward. Thanks for your wishes and the same to you. All the best for tomorrow. X.

Hi Gigi

I sat down and apologised for stressing her and she said no I apologise! She said I get frustrated with not knowing how to treat all my illness and I was a bit rude with me. She said I know you were upset when you left and I realised what I said was wrong!

I pknow I should accept her apology but I think no she is meant to be a professional and should know that how she spoke etc was wrong abd I've lost trust in her. She was very sincere but I dint feel any better about her.

She agreed to put me back on morphine patches and is giving me a steroid cream ti put on under the patch which should stop the itching. As for fluid she just said I see your legs are no better but never said anything else.

I'm still going to see the other Dr but reception said he's on 2 weeks annual leave!! Typical hey lol

I went to health ship on Saturday and got some dandelion tablets for fluid relief and surprisingly they are working as now not swollen above the knees. Laughable really but just says natural is best. Xx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

Hi Sally. At least you have the satisfaction she has apologised, she was completely out of order, so can understand how you feel, this sort of unprofessional behaviour can cost lives. Also great news the dandelion tablets seem to be helping with the fluid retention, however still needs investigation as to why it happened in the first place, as so many possibilities. I hope you get some relief with the patches for your back. I have my first appointment with pain management Thursday week for lower lumber pain, have been waiting since February, can't take opiate drugs as they make me very ill. So rely on my medication for RD. All the best Sally when you get to see the other doctor. Take care. Hugs G X

Sallyk42

Aw bless you. Pain management are so nice. You will probably get offered the injections in spine. It'd dine as a day case, not the nicest procedure but really does help

When I had mine I was talking to others and there were people that had been in 8/9 times. Whenever it stops they apparently just get them done again. All of them said it helps.

I hope you get relief hun I do. And please keep in touch. Xx

Gigi71 profile image

Thank you Sally, my doctor has referred me for that, hopefully. I was kinda thinking it would happen next Thursday, my sister who had back trouble a few years back said yesterday they would make another appointment as they use the operating theatres for them. Have to a degree put my life on hold a tad as the pain stops me walking any distance, I'm sure you know all this too. Will keep in touch, you can always pm if you need a chat. Take care. Xx

Sallyk42 profile image
Sallyk42

Yes it's done just like an operation, lots of people in the room too. Your job is to stay completely still which Is hard work! I had 4 in my neck and around six o my cervical spine. Good luck it was about 3 week after first appointment. So hopefully you don't exit. Are you on fbook? Xx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

No not on Facebook, can't be asked, I should be as my WI post on there a lot, but manage okay. Goodness you have had a lot of treatment. We have a friend who has had lot of ops and procedures on her back and no further forward. Her last was was metal rods in her back, still in pain. They seem to have run out of options. Quite depressing really. My sister had trouble for years and always refused an op seems to be ok now. She plays a lot of golf. My nieces father in law had a stent fitted yesterday they let him home Monday and he had to go back in. I think he had had enough as couldn't sleep in there with all the noise. Xx

Sallyk42 profile image
Sallyk42

Oh no bless him, it's unbearable in there isn't it. I often think blood pressure etc go up in there and once home it's perfect. Your sister has been through it too. That's what seems to be occurring as in running out of ideas!! But I suggest something and thry do the complete opposite!! I swear the water is to do with that infection I had as I can just sit here relax my muscles and it starts burning. The water itself is clear of infection but I think.iys called urethra is where I have a problem and that started a year ago and got worse by having wee infection month ago. I've said this so thry take swabs inside?!?! Why?!

I give up a lot the pain is awful and let's face it we wouldn't make it up! Who would want to be put through the things we do?!

I sometimes think it would be nice to not do fbook but then I've made some amazing friends through being on it. Some pages on fibro and back pain etc are just full of information and I've found talking to people like you in the same situation is so good. Gives me a place to rant at times too. And my dog has been poorly and I'm amazed at say termeric paste and the results you get from giving it.

The talking and some of the posts at times the posters need ti get a life but in general it's great. Have I convinced you yet lol xx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

Hi Sally. Nope, I am involved primarily on the NRAS site, although don't post much I reply a lot. I also have Hasimoto's, osteoporosis among other things. I did join fbook, they drove me mad with emails, friend suggestions and my dearest friends in Portugal are on it, they would just inundate me photo's of their youngest granddaughter. I get enough now via whatsapp. I have 5 grandchildren, they are the joy of my life, all different, but I love them all and even thought they are older are very close to me. I have found Healthunlocked sites full of great information and ways to deal with health problems. I prefer a healthy diet and exercise although limited at the moment, Thanks for the info on the pain management. I have suffered over the years with UTI's my Last was 4 years ago and went on for months, they couldn't find any real infection, it was so frustrating. I lost so much weight, I am not big anyway. They eventually found my urethra was very tight and I wasn't emptying my bladder properly. They gave me a general and stretched it and fingers crossed have been okay since. We are backwards and forward to Urology with my partner he has had 6 UTI's in the last year and they still can't find the cause. He has an MRI next month. So can understand how you feel. Do take care Sally. Xx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

Sally just had a thought, I was put a water tablet many years ago for BP, it made me think I had an UTI. Tests showed no infection so I went back to the GP and he took me off them and gave me another type of medication and the problem went. It could be the same for you. X

Sallyk42 profile image
Sallyk42

Could be but the first bit you said is so me. Every wee I have I have to push it out! I can and do stop if I stop pushing even when it's come.g out fast!

I was on a water tablet and I stopped it vasecare. It seemed to stop me weeing so I stopped it Six months ago and now this xx

Gigi71 profile image
Gigi71

My GP had referred me to Urology, they tried to do a flexible cystoscopy in clinic and my urethra was too tight, that's when they booked me in for the rigid cystoscopy under a general and as I said stretched it and has been fine since. I do however have to make sure I empty my bladder. I do drink a lot of water and herbal or fruit teas. I do hope you can speak to the other doctor about your problems. I got my long awaited appointment for the Respiratory Clinic, I have a chronic cough my X-rays show as abnormal but could be RD related. I have never smoked . Always something. ! X

Sallyk42 profile image

Oh for God's sake what else. Uou.must be very worried I know I would be. Always something to smack us with isn't it.

I had the camera urology about 8 months ago. At the time they found nothing. So hopefully he might see something this time thats of I see him

What is the Rd? I haven't seen that before xx
