I slipped on ice nearly 3 weeks ago and although the initial bumps and bruises have gone, I have been left with nerve pains. When I fell I did the 'splits' and fell on my knee. The day after I fell I had pain in my knee and thigh and joints; back; shoulders; legs. The aching has gone but I am now having nerve pains in my back, hip, thigh, calf and heal - all in my left leg. These pains range from twinges to shooting pains and tightness in my thigh and calf. Is this normal after a fall?

Pain after falling
What did your GP say?
I haven't seen my GP yet. I have made an appointment for next week but wanted advice so I don't waste their time
As we aren't Doctors here I don't see how getting professional help is wasting time.
How do you know it is nerve damage you are feeling?
You may have broken a small bone. Or soft tissue damage
That makes sense, and you're right, I don't know what damage I've done so best to seek professional help
4 weeks after falling is a bit late.
usually advise to go to A&E for something when you appear to hurt yourself that badly.
See a chiropractor. May have a number of tight muscles pulling things onto nerves. Hence the nerves complaining.
It’s brilliant....
I was knocked over by two large dogs a few years ago and went crashing down onto my right knee. I ended up suffering from severe sciatica, and from what you’re describing you could be suffering from the same. I had to have surgery for spinal stenosis, so obviously I had other issues going on that I didn’t know about at the time, but I also had a prolapsed disc, which I’m sure came from the fall. I’m glad you’re going to see your GP, as they’ll be able to diagnose you correctly and give you the help you need. I only found Tramadol helped. Also Pregabalin is good for nerve pain.
Good luck and I hope it’s nothing serious. Let us know how you get on.
Thank you
I spoke to my cousin over the weekend and she said my aunt had taken a fall in the garden which resulted in surgery cause of crushed discs in her spine - this only materialised months after when she was still in pain. I knew she'd had the operation but didn't know the cause. It's my cousin that told me to go to the GP, obviously, she saw the effect it had on my aunt and what I described to her was very similar.
Fingers crossed!
Yeah, I’ve got three crushed discs at the base of my spine too. They’ll probably give you Naproxen and recommend physiotherapy, but if these don’t work (which they didn’t for me) keep pushing for something that helps. Naproxen on its own did nothing for me, nor does Co-codamol. It was my physiotherapist who referred me for an MRI scan which found the spinal stenosis and prolapsed disc etc. I hope it’s nothing this serious for you but, as I said, don’t put up with pain if what they give you doesn’t work and keep going back until everything’s explored properly. As I said before, let us know what your GP says, although without an MRI scan it’s almost impossible to know exactly what’s happened.
I know I kid around about falling but I have to let you know I have had three falls in one week and I was out of work for two months. The first I was walking into my house with my cane It was wet from the snow , as I put it down into the house I knew I was going down the cane had slipped out It was an inch away from the rug and when I went down I fell on my left knee. I was screaming before I hit the floor. My husband who told me to wait for his assistance had to pick me up but told me that he needed to pull my leg out of the door. Not good I was in the house crying in pain. The next day I was in the bathroom going to pick up something off the floor and my right knee clicked and gave out on me down I went on my backside not able to get up alone in the house. Thank goodness my husband wasn’t far away from the house I called him. It is a good thing to always have a phone with you. He came home I had to fold up my rollator for him to get into the room he asked me what I wanted to do I said just get me a cold pack and help me to the living room. Yes the next day I went to get an x-rays nothing was broken. Well you would think 🤔 I would be doing good I was until 4 days later we were going out again my husband said wait for him as he was moving the car did I wait no well I fell again backwards and hit me head on a chair and ended up in the ER I needed 2 staples in my head let me tell you that hurt like &@%# if you know what I mean. A week later I had to have them out I screamed as the nurse pulled out a hair. That was the time with my MS that I thought I still could do everything those times are gone I have a saying an it goes like this
“ Think before you do”
I learnt my lesson.
So I may joke around about things but MS has thrown me for a loop and it really hurts me that my life is going down this road.
Now I have one those buttons you know the one I’ve fallen and I can’t get up I have a neighbor who bought it for me and pays for it. I asked him a few months ago if he wanted to stop that is a true friend.
Poor you... You are bound to feel some pain for a while after a fall, but from what you say it could either be a trapped nerve or muscle pain through out the leg especially as you did the splits!!! Unless you are in the habit of doing the splits, you probably pulled all the muscles. But, do get it checked out. Best to be safe than sorry. Take care, especially in the icy conditions.
Wow, i know your pain, i also fell on ice 3 weeks ago, fell on both my knees in a prayer position, pain everywhere, think God was trying to get my attention! He has it
I just have a fear of falling again and I understand it is very scary because you never know how you gonna land when you fall.
Go slow every one.
I saw my GP last night and she said that my sciatic nerve is being tweaked/pinched. My pain has worsened over the past 2 weeks and I now have a 'dead' arm and leg. The pain has also progressed to my shoulders, neck and the full length of my left arm. They are not completely numb but very tender and tingle constantly. She has advised me to take the prescribed anti-inflammatory tablets and oramorph (prescribed for the pain and to help me sleep) and if the pain/symptoms continue to get worse then I should go to hospital immediately as this a sign of damage to the spinal discs/nerve which is currently being pinched (she advised that full numbness and loss of bladder/bowel control are signs of serious damage). Although I feel better knowing the cause, I am now overly concerned about this worsening. Fingers crossed the anti-inflammatory tablets ease the pain and no further treatment/investigation is required.
God bless our NHS! Thank you all for your advice, it was much appreciated
