Chronic and Acute Pain combined with Old Age

I'm new here and am living, at the sweet old age of 78, with myriad painful health problems; some are long-standing (migraines) and some are short-lived (two broken toes.) I found this site through an article on the web concerning cursing helping pain, which I found to be both true and amusing!

Glad you have joined us. I hope you will find some support and suggestions about how to manage your pain better.

I find the forum invaluable at times. Supportive and kind though family and friends try to be, ultimately only chronic pain sufferers really understand what it's like. It's a lonely business sometimes but Pain Concern people are always there, in varying numbers.

Why part of the country do you come from or are you abroad ?

I have been in constant pain for nearly 10 years firstly due to accident at work broken humorous and arthritis in hips and knees and hands. And had breast cancer 7 years ago and the tablets I'm on have added to the pain so have arthralgia and a trigger finger now through the tablets I have been tried on four diffevent ones but letrozole seems to be slightly better as got to stay on these for 10 years now. I'moved 74 in April worked till I was 66 then the cancer came so my retirement has been hell nothing seems to help the pain at all so just accepted it now and have to live with it

Hello and welcome!

Support networks, including online ones (and often specially online ones) are great for getting through rough patches. I have suffered from migraines since I was 14 (am now 58) and am on the cusp of being referred to the "headache" clinic - what an underwhelming title lol - where they inject botox into the scalp. I also have reactive RA and fibromyalgia of some 20 years standing, plus osteo in my knees, so pain various from moderate to excruciating through the day, depending on what activities I've been up to. The pain is always there and is draining. Am often off my feet because I simply cannot do chores/tasks because of pain. Am on the list for knee replacement this year. Am on a shedload of painkillers etc. I lost 7.5st a couple of years ago and just wish that the pain had gone away with the lard!!

I've met a lovely load of friends online, many in person too, without whom I would've ended it all when I was down in the abyss with depression. Luckily I finally met my soulmate after wasting 21 years on the wrong fella. Without my beloved, my life would be much harder than it would be otherwise. He helps me run a vintage stall once a week, but we are making plans to withdraw from that this year to run an online business and sell our stuff at craft fairs instead. Fingers crossed it all works out.

I recommend long soaks in a bath with epsom salts for magnesium, & swearing louder. These can be taken at the same time. ;)

Magnesium sprays are an alternative, bit a bit stingy which makes me swear. I make my own gentle version. Or a chelated magnesium supplement at bedtime might help, too.
