I have recently broken a rib and am using ibuprofen for the pain, but it is not really working. Is there anything else I can use?

i think you should get something from your doctor for this as its very painful indeed i'v had fractured ribs and it was agony. i was much younger when i had that. i remember how painful it was. it painful to move. you have my sympathy but i think you should go to the doctor, in the meantime you could buy paramol from the chemist they have coedine tartrate in them or you could buy the ibuprofen and coedine that come as one pill its codeine phosphate thats in them. they are quite strong as you get 20mg of the coedine in them i think they are about the strongest painkillers that you can buy over the counter.all the best, love grace xoxo

whatever you get for the pain, just ask the prescriber about possible addiction to the pain reliever. Some of the pills can be addicting if taken for more than 10-12 days.....just a thought. I know the pain you are experiencing and wish you well. I wish that someone had advised me regarding addiction years ago when my pain became chronic. Doctors are far to eager to write prescriptions for narcotics, instead of steering people in the direction of Integrative Medicine.

Co codamol is better but I would get some prescribed by your doctor as the over the counter stuff is often not strong enough. Hope you get better soon x

There are other ways to deal with pain other than drugs. Have you tried either heat or cold? both can stop the pain signals from getting to the brain. Distraction is good, and usually they recommend a good film or comedy as laughter also plays a part, but I think a really good absorbing drama might be better for a broken rib, you don't want to be laughing! Relaxing can be helpful, and also understanding that the pain is in the brain, not actually in the rib, so you can tell your brain thank you very much for letting me know I have a broken rib, can you now please go back to doing something else, you don't need to keep on at me. It works for some people. I have to use all these techniques as I can't take codeine or ibuprofen.

Your hospital should have given you a few weeks worth of pain killers, your GP can give you medication for this pain , which is a little higher in pain killing then just simple pain killers , like DF 118 but normally it's Codamol

Are you wearing anything around your rib cage ? I would wrap something tightly around and pin it or maybe even some sports tape. Hope your pain gets less with each passing day. Be kind to yourself..XO

Do not wrap your ribs. In the past, doctors would routinely use compression wraps to help splint and immobilize the area around broken ribs, but this practice has fallen out of favor due to the increased risks of lung infection or pneumonia. Do not attempt to wrap or bandage your ribs.
