Frustrated.

Hi everyone.I've posted before about my problems regarding my pains in calf and feet on walking which I developed 2 years ago.As I had peripheral vascular disease in my leg 19 years ago I went to my GP and was sent for tests which proved negative, after having some unsuccessful physio I was sent for nerve conduction tests where I was told I had mild neuropathy I had appointments with a neurologist who took blood tests and said the problem was a deficiency in vitamin B 12 and now I have injections every three months for life.Since then I have discovered I have diabetes.I have over the past 2 years been prescribed every anti depression and nerve tablets available all with no effect on the pain. Also I am under a pain specialist who says it more likely is muscular pain. My problem is my GP will not look any further than neuropathy and says I should accept my lot.Considering I have had peripheral vascular disease and had a heart attack 12 years ago and now have diabetes and still have this horrible pain in my leg and foot.I am so frustrated.

Best wishes to all.

hi bobknob 52,sorry to hear about your health issues,it sounds like your getting the run around and getting mixed messages, yes it definitely sounds like you've got peripheral neuropathy and I to felt like a turkey not looking forward to Christmas,I think once you've been diagnosed your just the next on the list,I felt a little bit bemused once I'd had all the tests your just expected to get on with life, but there feels like a void to be filled,I don't know how you felt but I travelled miles for a specialist appointment just to say I had peripheral neuropathy, after that I've not once been called in for a follow up and that's nearly 5 years ago! I've seen the pain clinics twice and cause neuropathy is so difficult to treat we as humans cling for a miracle cure,so I advise you to keep in touch with your GP go to the pain clinic and see what medication is available, and with your diabetes keep a careful eyes out for any cuts etc,as they to can cause untold problems on your legs,I've still got the physical pains in mi feet and legs,I think cause its on a painful daily basis I struggle both mentally and physically to get my head round it,I hope you get some help with your problems and maybe a few more answers than questions in the not to distant future, good luck 🍀

Thanks CB for your very supportive reply to my post .I'm so much better off than an awful lot of people on this site but I just felt like a rant.Yes you are probably right about the pain clinic being the way to go.I've got an appointment with them in February so hopefully they can sort a medication that helps.Once again many thanks.

If you were 'tested' for the peripheral vascular disease and the result was negative, that's good to know, right?

How long have you been on the B12 injections? Did they tell you when you should feel some relief from them? Lots of debate around Vitamin B12 deficiency and pain.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a drug out there that has totally addressed the neuropathy issue; many combinations of certain antidepressants and/or neuropathic pain meds but some of us are just going to have to accept it. Maybe your GP should've chosen better words than you just having "to accept your lot" but listening between the lines in any chronic pain conversation, it's the just of it!!

It's sounding like pain management is the way forward for you now using different techniques & strategies; yes it is very frustrating and upsetting and annoying and frankly, implausible and........etc etc, etc plus you're having to manage your diabetes!! I'm not surprised you're frustrated (and probably pi%@*d off) but you're in good company on here.......Have as many rants as you feel you need.......

I wish I could provide some solutions or hopeful scenarios for you.

Thanks RJC.Oh yes I was so glad I didn't have vascular disease. The pain in my calf and foot are so very similar it was unreal. As for the B12 I've been having them for 18 months with no improvement but I must say after having them I do feel more energetic wheather that's psychological I don't know. Many thanks for your very supportive reply to my rant.

If your pain specialists says it is more likely to be muscular, have you seen a podiatrist? They are the experts at feet and everything below the knee, and it could be something simple like insoles that might help.

Thanks Cyberbarn The pain specialist sends my GP a report of my visit but I think he agrees with the neurologist so I just keep being treated for neuropathy.Do I need to be referred by my GP to see a podiatrist.?Thanks again.
