PIP is replacing DLA (disability living allowance).
One of the best ways to find out about benefit entitlements is to make an appointment with the disability welfare person at your local CAB. They can help you with how to fill in forms, and also let you know about other relevant benefits that you might not have known about.
Hi Chez,
PIP is the benefit that is slowly being introduced to replace Disability Living Alowance which is there to help with the extra costs of care and mobility, if you are receiving this then you most likly will qualify for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) which is the replacment for Incapacity Benefit which is what you get to help you if you cannot work also if your husband has stoped work to care for you and you can prove you need more than 16 hours of care a week then he should qualify for Carers Allowance.
If you go to this site :-
ageuk.org.uk/money-matters/...
it has several links to pages where you can work out if you are qualify for the different benefits and costs nothing to do and is easy to use.
Good luck with your claim.
Regards Poppy Ann.
Slightly disagree Poppy_Ann. PIP can be claimed whether in our out of work so really not linked to ESA but yes it is to help with the extra costs of long term sickness and disability.
To qualify for Carers Allowance the person you are caring for must be in receipt of enhanced rate PIP care and you must care at least 35 hrs.
Having said that if her husbandd does claim ESA hhe will NOT get CA. DWP will only pay one benefit and it is alwayss the higher.
HHaving said all that IDS is starting a new attack today on ESA claimants. It just never ends

Hi Pat,
I must have confused you (i do it to myself lots) i ment to put over that if you are receiving PIP then you most likely will qualify for ESA not if you are receiving ESA that you will most likely qualify for PIP, I know you do not have to receive ESA to qualify for PIP it's just that most people who receive full PIP cannot work due to their disability I did make a mistake in saying that you only have to require 16 hours care which should have been 35 hours as you pointed out, I don't remember saying that if he is receiving ESA he can also recieve CA I thought I put if he has had to stop working to care for you then he can claim CA I doubt that if he stoped working to care for Chez that he would qualify for ESA as he stoped working for his own needs, I think that if someone has to stop working to care for someone else that they should receive at least as much as other people who recieve ESA which I believe to be around £109.30 but I belive that CA is only around £62?
I hope this helps sort out the mix up I put before.
regards Poppy Ann.
The whole system is confusing believe me!
Many people don't even realise therre are 2 groups of ESA.
Just to add to the mix - I used to get the old IB then migrated to ESA support. I have the highest rate of DLA for both care and mobility AND full time carer to David! But as I got ESA I couldn't claim carers allowance.
So I am deemed not fit for for work but can be an unpaid carer. Mad.
Now I have gently wandered into retirement I get my pension and still DLA but still no carers allowance. Moe mad as David needs more care than ever.
But not to worry - after IDS speech yesterday - all disabled, chronically sick and anyone else he can find will all be going back to work cos as he says - it is good for you'!!!

Hi Pat, what the SS people think is that if you are disabled enough not to be able to work and so get ESA then you are to disabled to give care to someone else so cannot get the carers allowance, if you have moved from ESA to retirement pension then you may now qualify for the carers allowance it may be worth putting in a new claim.
I have a few years (2 1/2) to go before I can get the retirement pension so will have to stay on ESA until then, I am not sure how much my pension will be I received a estimate of pension a few years ago and think it was around £135 per week which is a little higher than my ESA but by the time I get there they may have changed it again and I bet if they do it will be down and not up.
regards Poppy Ann.
You can get a pension forecast every year if you want to keep up to date. I used to do that.
No they will only pay one benefit and it is always the highest. I was on IB then ESA support which was higher than carers allowance. As a pensioner you can't claim CA either as the pension is again higher than ESA.
Oh believe me they won't give you one penny if they can get away with it.
And you do realise IDS is now coming after ESA support having lowered the rate for ESA WRAG? Yup working is good for your health.
I do get my basic pension + a disability premium which takes it up to arounf £140 but nothing for looking after David.
I have to consider myself lucky then as I get two desperate pensions from the army which cannot be used in consideration of other benefits or tax (not much gets past the tax man) the only other thing I get is a very small private pension which is around £80 per month which is the only money they use when considering either tax or benefits and as I live on my own due to the low amount even that is is not normally used I think my income comes close to what I was earning 20 years ago so I am not complaining the only thing they did that I did not like was to move me from Incapability Benefit on to ESA support as now if I leave the country for more than 28 days they stop it when on IB you can be in any country that has a agreement with the UK which is all of the EU plus USA and several others.
regards Poppy Ann.
Yes i have been awarded pip my husband gave up work to help me as i cant walk to far as I suffer from all over body pains and spinal pains I do try and push myself cos I get fed up being stuck in .I have 5 children between ages of 9-14 so school runs has always been hard for me as I cant drive so id have to walk when he was working on top of generalised anxiety disorder so I hated having to go out especially on my own am nit to bad with someone but on my own I get very anxious.thanks for the info aperciate your advice
Hi I've just had to leave work also because of sickness I've had my carers stopped because I'm now getting esa 73 pounds a week . Can't get both I'm also going to apply for dla . You might b entitled to income related esa 😁
I may be wrong here but unless you are under 16 years, I don't think you can apply for DLA any more. If over 16 one can apply for PIP. Those of us who are still on DLA and know we will have to change to PIP dread what the post might bring in the form of a brown envelope.
Oh I know I live in ni we havnt changed yet but it's very strict now
I receive the standard rate pip £55.20 per week, my eldest daughter gets carers for me depending on the hours she works, so your husband should put a claim in for it, every little helps
When you say gets carers in - do you mean those from the local authoritu? If so this is different from unpaid carers.
To qualify for carers allowance of around £62 pw you must be in receipt of enhanced or standard rate of care.

Hello, Paton......... I claim carers allowance for my disabled son, He is on DLA at the moment.... Low rate for mobility, Middle rate for care....
Would I be right in saying that when the time comes to change to PIP benefit unless he is awarded enhanced rate for both care and mobility I could lose my carers allowance....?? Very worrying if that's the case.
Hello security
You don't say how old your son is? At the moment children under 16 will stay on DLA and it will only change to PIP once they reach that age..
You can apply for CA if he is awarded either of the 2 rates of the PIP care. ( standard or enhanced) Mobility has nothing to do with it.
But..and this is the big but...that is how things stand today. IDS has plans to get all benefits under one umbrella - Universal Credir but that ain't ever going to happen.
So for now sit tight and enjoy your vast amount of Carers Allowance! Sorry bad joke.

Thanks hun Il look into it its bloody hard not being able to work
You're right Rose. All working age which is 16 -65 new claims PIP. Although as retirement gets ever further away so will top end of claiming.
I had a large white envelope from DWP recently. But I wasn't fooled. It had that air about it.

Just talking about pensopns. It is easy to check on line for a forecast. No need to have NI nuber.
Once you have paid for 30 years you will qualify for a state pension however you will go on paying NI which just goes into the general tax collecting pot. It will not increase your pension but you can't opt out.
