Morning all, well today is the day I have my bone scan to try to decipher if the constant leg pain is from my hip replacement. Not looking forward to spending 4-5 hours in the hospital especially as its where is Used to work till Feb! Bound to drag up some old stuff! then got to wait for two weeks for results! wish me luck.

When did you get your hip replacement done? Am 46, my hip has been giving me major issues for at least the last 8 to 9yr...
I've been told that am too young to get mine done....

Hi Joe, Well I was 47 at diagnosis but guess the big difference was that I was fortunate to have private medical insurance. Otherwise I'd probably be waiting too! Just back from my bone scan so have to wait for appointment but when your time comes my advice would be to research your surgeon thoroughly; it's not that mine was bad but since then I've learned that different surgeons use different techniques and had I chosen a different one, the one i'm seeing now he would have gone into the hip differently thereby saving a lot of muscle trauma. coincidence or not I've have nothing but problems since. as well as everything else lol! sorry to her you've had to endure the pain for so long. I know the Nhs want to prolong as much as possible because of life span of prosthesis but it needs to be weighed up inn my opinion against the affect on quality of life in constant pain. I do hope you get it sorted.

All I want is the chance to live a pain free ish life, getting my hip done would help towards that....
Then it would just be my back pain to deal with, on which am having lots of problems with at the moment...

Joe me too. I feel for you. Can you go back to gp and ask for re referral? Would it be worth enquiring how much it would cost privately?

Thank you for all information on here, I have had my titanium hip replacements since I was 25, I am now 52 and I have had 27 years of being fit and healthy and always being in full time work. It was only in the last seven years that my hip has slowly deteriorated and my weight has gained due to not being able to keep up with my fitness due to my age. I have always kept going though upto about a month ago when I had a virus and then cracked feet which I have been getting on and off for the last two years due to dehydration/menopause problems then it clears up but this time, it went to my left hip and I suddenly started limping and could not put weight on it so have had to walk with a stick and my right hip has gone shorter (this has always been shorter) but it has got a bit worse now then after about a month still going to work with my stick, it suddenly went worse and I only just managed to get home as the pain was like toothache and could hardly put my foot down then my right foot felt pressured. The doctor the next day has put me on strong pain killers which has eased it and has given me a month off work while I wait for a surgeon but now heard it will be4th august which seems to be a long time just to wait for a check up. I will now try and ask for bone scan with the doctor first if possible as this will speed up the process a bit and also research the surgeons to find the best one for me as I wasn't sure if my hip had just come loose or if this is my weight but the bone scan should clear this up hopefully, thanks again
I have looked in to doing a few procedures privately, then I found out through a friend that it would be the same Surgeon as who would do it as NHS procedure...

Hi Joe yes prob would be the same surgeon a they cross work between the nhs and private practice. Bit galling I know but if you are in a position to do it privately does it matter if it gives you your life back? Wishing you all the best ,

Joe I had my hip done at 46 in 2009 I know many people who have had hips done under 50 there are some consultants who specialize in doing younger persons hips maybe your GP could refer you to one of those it annoys me when so many people are being told too young and have to put up with the horrible pain when there are surgeons who will do younger hips hope you get it sorted soon
Sometimes if you pay for the first consultation privately they will do the actual op on the NHS so you only end up paying for the first consultation if you get nowhere being referred by GP maybe that's an option
Definitely Good luck. I have just been given a month earlier appointment for the surgeon now on 8th July so well pleased and will be finding out next week with my GP if I may need a bone scan before I see him
Cath if you could get a bone scan before that would be great. Be prepared to wait a long time at the hospital... I was there yesterday for 5 hours! with the particular hip I have... and Accolade cementless one there have been problems with adherence to the bone in oly 5% of cases..mainly women, so think my surgeon wants to rule it out first. If its not that I guess I'll have to put up with the pain. anyway good luck honey.

Thanks Jo, luckily I didn't have to pay anything so it just goes to show some people can cancel or have to postpone so always check for earlier appointments if needed. I'm not sure what type I had now as it was so long ago, although I know it was cementless and titanium as it was in the early days when they didn't know how long they lasted and was hoping they lasted for life which is has in my case as 27 years is a good part of my life.
I hope you get yours sorted out and will be pain free, you can always try reiki which I think does work but everybody feels different things so you can never tell really. All the best to you! Cath
Cath thanks. A few people have rcommended Reiki, I'm very open minded about treatments but the problem is when you are so desperate for relief yu can get sucked into all sorts of things and I'm s stressed about money after losing my job I'm worried about spending money unnecessarily. btw the pip form just arrived to fill in......omg daunting!
