Hi jenf, sorry to hear you still in pain, unfortunately surgery doesn't always solve the problems, base on my own experience I have suafter with lower lumber spine pain for 8years, the pain is more aggressive at night when lying down,it radiate into my right hip inparticular, don't realy know why as my left hip doesn't suffer any kind of pain cramp nor thingeling whatsoever.I had a hysterectomy in May 2013 which a mri show my uterus was tilted backwards and was pressing on my spine, I taught after having that surgery my back problem will be solve, unfortunately it seems to got worsen where my right leg is beginning to get like a purple colour and bruses at time when I havent even get hit,I will often have hot bath when the pain is so severe as painkillers is out the question caus the doesn't even work, in the day the pain is excruciating when standing sitting or walking, the Dr said they cannot do anything as there isn't any damage to my disc, I ask it I can have a steroid injection but they go on to say its risky due to the nerves, I have bin going to chronic pain clinic, and physio which isn't any help at all, they told me I will have to just carry on living with the pain but they are getting me every help to Lear to cope with it a little better, im waiting to start physio occupationl therapy, counseling and see a physiacetris hope I'll get some comfort from that, it doesn't help either that I was a international marathon runner for meny years, all the best for the future.

Buttocks, thighs and hip pain, (legs too,) can also be down to just a vitamin D deficiency, not saying this is your problem jenf, (see the 'vitamindcouncil' website,)

I had similar hurting pains thought it all down to old age, (stiffness) and thought I might need new hips, but it turned out to be down to just a vitamin D deficiency, which 80% + of us in the UK are supposedly are , many without knowing. I now supplement with a good dose of Vitamin D3.

If nothing is found on the X ray, consider having a Vitamin D blood test, even if just to rule it out, maybe ?

If you do have a Vit D test done, do ask for the result and range as sometimes a Medic will say your blood is OK/Normal, but it might be showing 'low', 'within range.' indicating there still maybe a problem.

Hi Jenf, this is the first time ive commented on this site and i share the same problem as yourself. I had a nursing career for 30+ years which i loved. I had two slipped disks which healed pretty well and the usual low back ache which unfortunately comes with the job. Then i started to get sharp pains in both groins and tight, burning thighs most of the time but worse at night. I was struggling to do a long day on the ward as the pain got too bad so i saw a specialist about having a possible hip replacement. My ex ray came back as moderate arthritis in right hip which was my most painfull hip at the time. The consultant said that if i have a hip replacement done he can almost garrantee that most of my backpain would go. So after the hip replacement was done and the anisthetic wore off i was in total agony with my back and still am to this day. The hip replacement was done in january 2012. I have been diagnosed with chronic bilateral pars defect and spondylolisthis at L5 and S1. Apparently the pain in my groins and thighs were coming from my back and not my hip in the first place so there was no need to have hip done. ANGRY? Oh YES. Because my back is worse so are my hips/ groins/ buttocks and thighs and can no longer work. In your case Jenf i think you may be looking at your back as it sounds like the same leg pain that i am getting. Ask to see a specialist. Good luck.

Lowlife, what a story! Being within the Health Service is no guarantee of cockups is it? Have you tried any massage therapy, such as sports massage? This can help loosen the tight muscles, hip adductors and ligaments which are trying to protect your lower back. The pain in your groin might be a symptom of piriformis or sacroiliac tension. Just a thought!

Hi calceolaria, yes have tried everything including all pain injections but they only work for the maximum of three months and doesnt help with the leg pain which can sometimes be worse than the back pain. Manual physio hurts like hell and only relieves the pain for an hour or so. I swim alot and my legs are much stronger now which means that i can walk further than before although its still not very far before i have to sit down again. Aqua zumba keeps me fitter as the water takes away my body weight making it easier, and hanging my body down the deep end is bliss. Could stay there all night if i could but that is the only time i get relief. Pain meds are rubbish, sleeping is impossible and consentration has gone out of the window. However i do find it helpful knowing im not on my own here and know that there are people worse off than me so I'm thankful for that. I feel for anyone struggling with pain and know how hard it is to keep going. Keep smiling and grit your teeth and pray that they find a cure for pain with no side effects.
