I recently posted a question about a drug I have prescribed for back problems. I have been told that I am not suitable for surgery. One of the replies mentioned Artificial Disc Replacement. I would like to hear if other people have had this done and if it improves their quality of life.

Artificial Disc Replacement
Ny understanding that's it's be and quite radical. No firm results about positive outcomes. Not. sure either, how much it is being performed in UK.. d
Ther is a site in www called ADR uk I think. It is definitely worth a visit. It has all the iformation good and bad. Tips and hints for pre and post surgery, also has a list of current surgeons and latest ADR being used any problems with hardware etc. there are X-rays and scans pre and post surgery too.
A very good site to visit if you are contemplating this type of surgery.
Hi Court, I think I mentioned in a meds related post that I have an artificial disc at L5/S1
I wasn't suitable for fusion as I have had multiple prolapses and surgeries.
Many docs and pain management specialists are not informed about this possibility. I found a great deal of very useful information on ŵww.adrsupprtuk.com and you will see my threads of my story - I'm registered as Curlyshirl56. Feel free to PM me through that site if I can help.
The type of artificial disc I have is Spinal Kinetics M6L - worth a google search to learn about the technology.
On a personal level I don't regret the surgery for a moment. I had ferocious sciatica for 13 years pre ADR and this went afterwards. I won't write all the story here as it's probably easier for you to read the threads. Other peoples stories will help too perhaps.
The only thing I would say is research is key - the surgeon needs to be skilled and have done many of these ops and offering the best disc available.
Wishing you all the very best,
Happy to help further if I can
Shirley
Hi Court,I had an artificial disc replacement at L5-S1 12 months ago,for bone on bone pain,no disc left in that space, which caused severe pain in lower back, pelvic rims and sciatica, not suitable for fusion at that level due to other problems, I have to say I am absolutely delighted with it, I have seen slow but consistent improvement in my pain and mobility levels, this is not a quick fix, but right from the very start, my Consultant made me very aware that this takes time to heal and settle down, and indeed I have seen the improvement over the last twelve months, I have worked hard at keeping my weight down and getting mobile, I have swum twice every week, and even though some days it has been hard work, the more you swim the better it gets. If you are thinking this is your best option then the sites that have been suggested by other member are very good, and where I went to help my decision.Good luck.
