Peripheral neuropathy

I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet and lower legs caused by type 2 diabetes. Recently I have been getting sharp pain on my shins. I have no idea what may be causing it other than the neuropathy. I have not hit my shins against anything . I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has an explanation

Hi Sapiens,

I think yes this going to be the cause, while PN is most-often associated with Pain in the extremities, as these are served by the longest nerves in your body, it is not uncommon for the pain to manifest at other "junction points" along the way, e.g you might get it in your fingers, but then also your wrist and armpits.

I have been on a couple of different drugs for this, recently had to change my medication and the time between stopping one and starting the other was truly hellish, I hope you are getting the help and support you need from your doctor and others in your life.

Best TeamJ.

Many thanks Team J. Would welcome info' on the drugs you have been prescribed and which ones work. I went up to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital's Neuropathy Dept and they just said 'you know you've got neuropathy, we know you've got neuropathy but nothing can be done and we will not be sending you another appointment!!

Hi Sapiens, you're not going to beleive this but I am served by the exact same Hospital. What are the chances of that...

Was on Gabapentin which worked pretty well, but then I went onto Pregabalin which I found to be far more effective. I have problems with my TMJ which causes all manner of weird pains and sensations around the body. I also use Amityptaline and Codeine when needed. You need a referral to the pain management unit at the N&N (Ask/plead with your GP).

Best from Norfolk.

I 'liked' this post Not because I liked it!! but as a suffering Knew what you were suffering..It is awful, feeling that the Hospital dept. you are visiting Is Signing you off, without an explanation, of how to get on with things....Hope you are getting the support of your GP and that he has supplied you with the Meds you need to combat this pain....

What is TMJ please? I get severe incapacitating pain round my neck and shoulders from time to time. It is only alleviated by sitting back on the sofa. Difficult to do when out in town shopping. I have been given Neurofen gel but hard to put on your neck (wife left me when I started falling apart!). I do not know if this is related to my neuropathy or not. In fact neither GP nor physios have given me any explanation and GP has never had an X-Ray done nor a Consultant assessment organised. Greetings from Suffolk!

I have the same awful illness, but I am not diabetic. No idea where it came from but it started slowly many years ago. Now it is affecting not only my feet, but greatly my hands. The other day the end of my nose felt tingly....heaven forbid, it is moving more. I have tried some of the drugs recommended, but most cause really fast weight gain, so am trying to cope. Guess I will eventually have to give in to the drugs, as sometimes it is so painful....however, I have always been very slim so hate the weight gain thing.

HI THERE,

SOUNDS LIKE SEEING A PAIN CONSULTANT IS YOUR BEST BET, THEY ARE AMAZING AT NEUROPATHIC PAIN, COULD BE WHATS CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. I HAVE CHRONIC NEUROPATHIC PAIN IN MY ARMS HANDS LEGS FEET AND ABDOMEN WHICH IS SO DEBILITATING AND PAINFUL, BUT IT WAS THE PAIN CONSULTANT WHO DIAGNOSEDED ME, SO HOPEFULLY YOU WILL GET THE HELP YOU NEED, JUST KEEP ASKING FOR HELP AND IT WILL COME.

STAY POSITIVE

Very good advice.....and I will take this, and go back to my doctor and ask to be referred to the Pain Clinic....again and again and again....still have not had an apt.3 years later.......but even tho I am suffering high level's of Neuropathic pain..and I'm glad I always had a high pain threshold...I think Now I'm not going to suffer this pain any longer..And have discovered about myself, that I am a very determined Lady...must be to suffer like this and still carry on...Wished I'd known how determined I was years ago. Cheers keep smiling....

I read all i can on this subject, for me the worst aspect of PN is appalling balance, I can cope with most issues, but the severe balance problem affects everything i try to do, any comments or advice most welcome
