I have been taking Amertryptly for years and put on weight. Not surprising when it says on the blurb with the meds that it can affect how fat is stored in the body. I wonder if Pregabalin may be the same. Anyway, I have underactive thyroid and Diabetes 2. Thyroxin taken for the thyroid and low fat diet advised for the D2. Well my body seems to not handle carbs in any form, so lots of veggies, porridge low fat things just didnt work when I dieted. I have been on the Atkins diet (low carbs, natural meat and fats) and I am losing weight in spite of the meds and, due to M.E. I am unable to exercise. So, I am just suggesting that maybe a change of diet may help. It has been proven that its transfats that the body does not recognize, together with sugar (even sugar substitutes because the body thinks its sugar) and not natural animal fats that make the body store fat. The health industry is worth billions so they are not going to let on that low-fat/low calorie/carbs diets do not work although this has been proven. Its just a thought I wanted to put forward since it is working for me.

I have exactly the same problem, sparky, so I'll be interested to hear what other people have found has helped them. I'm on pregabalin for fibro ... and I, too, suspect hypothyroidism, so my weight has increased dramatically. And I also have OA so the strain on my joints isn't good at all!

ladybear - that's interesting about the Atkin's diet. I'll have a look at that. Thanks!

I have yoghurt and cheese for my calcium. Atkins does not exclude milk or dairy after the initial phase and in fact encourages use of real butter. Its really all about cutting away at having transfats (watch out for vegetable oils in things like dairy spreads and forget the myth of low-calorie ) and sugars but promotes vitamins from real meat, butter, vegetables and fruit (in moderation). Our bodies need natural fats and not man made ones.A small word of caution though; High protein diets do rather gum up the works a bit, at least in the first phase of the diet. I had a couple of figs each day which seemed to solve the problem for me but if your meds cause a gumming up of the works anyway then it helps to have an occasional laxative to ease things and to drink loads of water. I hope all who try this find that they are back in control of at least one thing in their life health wise. I needed to do that and It really does give a boost to the self-esteem. :-)
