Noticed the front page of the express newspaper today is showing a story about some new pain relief drugs for arthritis. Have to take a closer look at this news later. Just thought I would let people on this site know so they can check what it is about and wether it will be of help for their pain

Hello BOB here

I saw the news on the Newspaper review last night, it was just in passing, something to do with a 40% reduction in pain.

We need to wonder if they are a new Biologic medication to join the others on the market.

They say they are good although the contra indications can be severe.

We will find out soon enough I suppose the cost will be prohibited for several years by NICE

All the best

I have just looked at this article and it is talking about giving Methotrexate to combat pain in OA, not sure that I would want to take it as side effects can be pretty severe. However if it works!

I would be wary unless under strict rheumatology supervision, but it is used quite a lot for rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica, to reduce the need for steroids. I was put on azathioprine as an alternative, although it doesn't seem very effective.

I have been taking methothrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis under guidance of the rheumatology clinic and my regular blood tests are showing that it is helping to combat the antibodies though I need another drug added, which the clinic is

dealing with at present. I had some sickness when I started methothrexate but I am now on 20mg a week and have no

side effects at all.

I am always wary of drugs that require long term use, but sometimes we have to weigh up the gain versus the side effects which can only be a personal decision.

Hello BOB here

I was looking at a further report this pm and it was about the core of a pineapple, There was talk of a certain enzime

in the core that works well on reducing swelling on problem joints.

Personally not sure of this one. Will carry on looking I suppose.

Would keep eating pineapple if I thought it would work

Bob Here again

Got news today that I will be starting on Methotrexate again. The drug fails too suit me so I am not looking forward to it

Normally I need to take it by mouth although now they want me to inject, so after a couple of jabs of this terror I will be giving my own jabs.

It would not be so bad, they have now found my kidneys are now not so good, so that will increase the bloods they need too take. I suppose they need to do something, when you change specialists

All we do I suppose is behave and smile I am not very optimistic. We can get wrong for that

Hi Bob sound's interesting about the pineapple, most of us with joint pain or swelling are willing to try anything to help, but might have to eat a lot of pineapple to get the desired effect (smiles) Sorry to hear you have Kidney troubles, that in itself can cause joint pain so hopefully your consultant visits won't be in vain and they will find better help for your joint pain. Best wishes and good luck
