Thank you both. I phoned mastmedical in London. Consultation £70 but they want an MRI not more than 3 months old or can offer one for £700. 
Sadly mine is much more mechanical in origin, and with resulting Osteoarthritis, but if this is a potential option for anyone, I am sure some significant savings can be made.
MRI scanning at Solihull near Birmingham is available for much less @ cmcimaging.co.uk/index.html I can't find current prices, as the page is not loading, but last time I researched a few months back, it it was in the 2/300 quid range for one body area.

Does anyone know if this is possible for modic type 2 changes (that's what I have) or is it only suitable for modic type 1 changes. I'm not sure if modic type 1 can progress to modic type 2.
My understanding is that the test group was Modic type 1 but not clear if other types would benefit.
Whats the difference between type 1 and type 2?
And how do they propose preventing the bacteria entering the bloodstream?
Im not entirely sure but Type 1 seems to be a basic level of damage, where vertebra are swollen. Type 2 more complex/extensive? There's a Type 3 as well.
I didn't see anything about prevention.
The Modic types are Google-able. I'm just not going there as I can feel myself getting pulled in to stuff which may be more than I want/need to know at this stage!
I had a day of frenzied hope and like Cal above felt I was being pulled into stuff...I took part in the guardian online q&a with the author of the study and asked her what's to stop the bacteria coming back as it does in cases like Rosacea and you end up addicted to ABs. Her reply didn't answer the question but it was interesting to read thru the questions and answers. It's good to know that research is taking place all the time but this one seems unlikely to help the many. Wiki has a good explanation of modic changes. 
£700 is well OTT for MRi!
The study showed excellent results 12 months after treatment. It's all a bit mysterious, the cause/recurrence aspect. Incidentally, as you mention it Boozybird, I have recently become prone to mild rosacea ! Oh joy !
