Good morning!

I had my debulking surgery three weeks ago and it included my appendix. I have not taken any pain medication since week 1. I am feeling fine. Up and functioning - looking like a slightly slower version of myself but likely nobody would even suspect anything.

But! I am still tender throughout my pelvis and abdomen. And I get some discomfort - especially on and off on my right side (where the mass and my appendix were). Did you guys have this type of thing? None of this gets bad enough for even a Tylenol to be needed but I am wondering about these types of lingering vague pains.

Insights?

Thanks.

Hi Coop1969

Those pains you describe are completely normal and will go on to some degree for a while. You have been through a major op and it’s still very early days! I hope you continue to recover as well as you have been xx Jen

Hi Coop1969. You’ve had a major operation and things are healing and readjusting in there. These ‘niggles’ are normal. It sounds as though you’re doing great. It’s important to have regular short walks but also rest when you need it (the odd nap). It’s amazing how the body recovers.

I was shocked to hear it would takes *months* for my abdomen to feel normal again, but it definitely did. Give yourself lots of time!

I've had three abdominal surgeries in my life, and each time I had lingering pain for months, although it wasn't severe after the first few weeks. I had a cesarean with my first child, and it hurt every time I picked him up for at least two months, and I still got an occasional twinge after almost a year. The hysterectomy was easier to recover from in a lot of ways. It sounds like you're recovering quickly if you're feeling so well after only three weeks. Take care and good luck. --Lani

That's completely normal. It took at least six months for all the twinges and niggles to settle down for me.

Hi there, I’m am currently recovering from debulking plus HIPEC which also included my appendix. I’m just a little over 2 weeks and am still tender . I try and get as much movement, like walking around but I get winded quickly . When I urinate it hurts like I have a UTI but the doctor said that’s all normal. The HIPEC definitely gave me some symptoms like my regular chemo, however no where near the intensity. I’m due to start my 2nd round of chemo on Dec 30th, such is protocol. I wish you luck , it’s a long and twisty road, but I’m so hopeful and so blessed that we have so many advancements in the medical industry and it’s only getting more advanced.
