Carbo/Caelyx and CA 125

Hi Ladies,

My mom has been treated for her first recurrence with the Carbo/Caelyx combo since September 2023 and she so far has finished 4 rounds. Her CA 125 went down from 258 to 18 after the third round and the CT scan showed the cancer in her peritoneum shrank significantly.

After the 4th round, though, her CA 125 went up slightly from 18 to 24. I know it’s still under the bar, but I’m a bit worried. Has anyone had similar experience? Is this cause for concern?

I’d really appreciate your advice!

Thank you.

Hello,

Really seems very good for your mother.

I had my blood taken before my second infusion caely6/ carbo yesterday and went up from 345 to 595 the ca 125.

I'm very worried as you can imagine.

My first infusion was only caelyx, got an obstruction od my bowels, fighting covid...doctors say many thing could explain.

Anyway gives me HOPE is working for your mother.ca 125 can fluctuate a bite. In case you are really worried ask a MRi.

Even that in my case doesn't help as my MRi doesn't show anything different.

Really seems ca 125 cab be difficult to have a precise parameter.

Good luck sorry I couldn't help much.

Warm regards

Thank you so much for your reply, Pumpkininja! I can definitely relate and understand your concern. And I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with so much.

There are studies out there that early jump in CA 125 after 1-2 rounds of Caelyx may be because cancer cells are dying, and such increase should not be directly associated with inefficacy of the drug. A lot of people experience an early jump and then decline in CA 125 after 3 rounds. You can find these studies by googling Doxil (what Caelyx is called in the States) and CA 125. As you have only had two rounds, it’s likely your CA 125 can go down afterwards.

Best of luck! Let’s beat this beast.

Well it seems by a post I saw from 6 years ago : caelyx causes constipation and also can cause colon obstruction even without constipation. Was my case :(. So I ended up here in the hospital due to a side effect of caelyx ( colon obstruction) and i was already fine and since yesterday after my imfusions caelyx /carbo again same issue. We truly need to find a away to cope with so many things ..

Best wishes and thank you for everything

Pumpkininja It’s very common for OVCA patients to have obstruction/constipation. We really deal with a lot, don’t we. But I’ve read a lot of people did well after recovering from these side effects, so hang in there!

Best wishes to you too!
