Is anyone considering joining the uk action re use of Johnson & Johnson talcum powder and the link to certain ovarian cancers? I’m in my sixties and I remember using their talc throughout the 1970’s it was very common in my peer group. Action has been taken in the states and I heard a radio ad from a law firm in the uk who are taking action on behalf of women in the uk.

Very interested to see how this goes as also in my sixties used this talc every day as did most of my friends.Always thought it safe as generally a baby powder! Was asked a list of questions when my OC was found re. Hrt,natural births, breast feeding, family history etc.but talc usage was never mentioned . Think the debate has been ongoing for some time .Dee x
Yes the debate has been going on for sometime but I never really thought about it when I was diagnosed and there didn’t seem to conclusive evidence that the talc could be the cause of some ovarian cancers. I’m guessing the uk solicitors believe there is a strong enough case to start an action. I’ve joined up to start the process to see if I meet the criteria and will keep you posted. Linda x
Just looked up what Ovacome has said previously. The evidence is inconclusive and unlikely to have affected people who used the product from the 1970s onwards (as they stopped using talc which might contain traces of asbestos).
J and J have had orders made against them in the US but plan to appeal.
I did use the product occasionally in the 1960s but as I am a BRCA carrier, they would point to that as the cause of my cancer.
Also of course, I went to school in the 60s and 70s and the buildings were known to have asbestos!
I think unless you have a very convincing link then it may be more trouble than it’s worth xx
Hi Lyndy, I’ve read up on discussions about the link between use of talc and ovarian cancer and agree it’s not very conclusive but because of the us ruling it seems there may be a case to answer. I’ve decided to join the group action being taken here in the uk, dependent on meeting the criteria of course., I feel strongly that if there is a link that j&j should be held accountable. Linda xx
This interests me. I’m BRCA negative but used J & J baby powder on both my groins after showering up until I was diagnosed & heard there maybe a connection.
How do I go about finding out more about the law firm who are going to investigate this further?
Hello, yes I've looked into it and couldn't find anyone who felt the same as me. It was used on me in the 60s, then I used it myself through the 70s and a bit through the 80s. I just didn't know where to start.
hi, the website is mytalcclaim.co.uk. I’ve registered on the site, there’s a lot of paperwork to read through but I believe it’s worth a try. If you decide to join, keep in touch so we can compare notes 😀good luck. Linda x
I think you’re right not to go ahead if you’re unsure. Having read through the contract i agree that there is a a small chance that you may have to pay something if the case is lost and the insurance doesn’t meet the costs. As this is a test case in the uk, you can wait to see what the outcome is and then decide if you think it’s worth pursuing personally. Xx
thanks for letting me know, I’m still reading through the contracts and t&c to make sure I understand it fully. There is a 14 day cooling off period to withdraw your claim without incurring any costs so I want to be sure its ok. Keep in touch xx
hi, sorry I’m not sure, this particular action is in the UK, if you go to the website there is some faqs and also an email address where you could contact them and ask the question. Good luck x
The evidence is weak at best and likely to be turned down. The criteria for damages in the USA are far less than they are here and the case wasn't really made there (J&J settled, which some take to be evidence of guilt, but is really just about them saving time and money pursuing an action that had little merit). As soon as you consider the millions of women and girls who used talc, or had it used on them, and did NOT get cancer, the case is substantially weakened.
hi, thanks for taking the time to comment, there is a lot of divided opinion out there and from reading several of the US cases some have been successful and some not.
