I have very similar issues. I had a stoma initially and then a reversal but still get problems. I finally had an op to cut the scar tissue away last year and for a while it was better. Now I have the same pains and issues. The consultant said the more they operate , the more scar tissue. So I, too, would be interested to hear others responses and how they have overcome this. I am very careful with diet and take laxatives every day but like you still have issues.
Hi there. Having had a bowel blockage, I empathise with the pain you felt - it was excruciating and I ended up in hospital for four days, nil by mouth, but their concoction did work. I have made some adjustments to my diet, as advised by lovely ladies on this forum. However, I did have bad pain on Friday evening/night and even got a bag ready to go to hospital. I decided I would go if I started vomiting but thankfully that wasn’t the case. Took laxatives and they did the trick. Went on liquids on Saturday and am gradually eating more normally, chewing for England!! I have a four-stage plan given to me by a dietician which is precisely for people in our situation. Perhaps you could get something similar?
thank you so much for replying so sorry you have been suffering I know only to well how that feels
Ito have ended up in a e several times which has helped I just wish that when the pain starts there was something one could take to help I live in hope
Hi 1946val, my heart goes out to you. I was in a similar position, 1st time a&e put me on nil by mouth & drip, after 6 days blockage cleared. Went on partial low fibre diet, drank lots, all food well chewed. 2nd bad blockage caused by adhesions from debulking surgery ended in a stoma, (now reversed). Large section of colon removed. Still v careful with fibre, food cooked v well, minimum pulses. You could discuss a stoma with your consultant, a major operation & s/he's right, can cause more adhesions. l would seek dietician advice from the hospital, they were wonderful to me when l'd almost stopped eating totally, gave me compassionate practical advice & eating plan. Best wishes & good luck, tell us how you get on.
hi Stylek thank you so much for your valuable information so sorry to hear how much you have suffered what I find hard to accept one never knows the time scale when it happens again so glad your hospital were able to help you and may you continue to be pain free for a long time to come
Hi 1946val, yes blockages come out of the blue. l kept a diary of what l ate & how cooked for 1 1/2 years, learnt what foods triggered pain & could, & could not tolerate. It's worth it. Do try for a refferral to the dieticians, Oncology CNS should be able to refer. This is a scary time for you, it's good to share with other women who understand, empathise & support. Warm best wshs
Thank you for your post. I’m so sorry to hear that you have been experiencing abdominal pain and vomiting every few months and have had to visit A&E because of these symptoms.
I can see that many members of the forum community have shared their experiences with you regarding bowel blockages, which I hope has been helpful. I wondered whether you have had the opportunity to discuss this problem with your clinical nurse specialist or oncologist? They should be able to provide you with personalised advice and guidance about managing these symptoms, considering your own individual circumstances and medical history. If you would like any help in planning or preparing for any future appointments, the Ovacome support team are here for you, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
In addition, I see that some forum members have mentioned Ovacome’s information resource about diet for a blocked bowel, which can be found here: ovacome.org.uk/blocked-bowe... . I hope this may be of interest. However, it’s really important to note that this information doesn’t replace a conversation with a healthcare professional who can provide you with personalised suggestions. Several members have also spoken about a referral to a dietitian, who will be trained to offer expert dietary and nutritional advice. Your clinical nurse specialist, oncologist or GP should be able to make this referral on your behalf.
If you would like to talk anything through with a member of the Ovacome support team, there are lots of ways to contact us. You can send us a message directly through this forum, email us via support@ovacome.org.uk or call our friendly support line on 0800 008 7054. We’re here Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm, to help with questions or chat about anything that may be on your mind.
I really hope you can access some personalised clinical guidance about this problem soon so that the painful issues you’re experiencing can resolve as quickly as possible.
thank you so much Annie for all your very helpful information I have spoken to a hospital dietitian in the past also spoke to oncologist who is very supportive but I feel I need more help and advise which I am going to look into as having these episodes takes my confidence away and does not help with my relationship with food
Iam so grateful for your support thank you so much
Thanks so much for your reply. I'm really pleased to hear that the information above was helpful. It's reassuring to learn that your oncologist is supportive and I hope they will be able to provide you with some more personalised guidance and suggestions of how to alleviate your symptoms. If you would like to talk through anything or help plan for any upcoming conversations with your clinical team, please do let us know. We're here to support you.
Yes, I've had this and it isn't very pleasant. I was told to stop eating until I could poo and if it didn't work I would have a small operation to unblock my bowel. Luckily, after a week of not eating I managed. I've never been so sick though. I do hope you get it sorted out okay soon. x
thank you so much Zena J for your reply I feel for you knowing how difficult bowel blockage and sickness can be I pray one day we will be offered some lasting help I wish you well on your journey Val
Thanks Val, did you know there is a free booklet offered on this site for people suffering from bowel blockages. It offers advice on what foods to avoid and what foods to eat. I found it useful. If can be downloaded or sent to you.
Hi Val, I have suffered through a few bowel blockages through the years. It was very uncomfortable and I just want to send my best wishes that things will get better for you. Abdominal surgeries create more scar tissue which unfortunately creates the problem. Donna
thank you so much Donna for your feedback I know surgeons are reluctant to operate unless it is so necessary but it would be so helpful if there was something one could take when the symptoms start to help with the excruciating pain and sickness one must live in hope
